. Need to know.
Industry travel advises -
Standby travel from London a challenge until mid-August. Until
mid-August,Air Canada and Canadian Airlines are anticipating high
passenger loads from London Heathrow to Canada. Standby travel could
be a challenge for employees and their guests_please keep this in mind
when making travel plans, and consider alternate arrangements.
From Doug Lovat (Director Pensions & Employee Benefits).
"We will not be redoing the Active or Retiree Travel Guides until the two
airlines have an opportunity to completely integrate their employee travel policies "
Our source says ETA October 2000.
We received the following question from Bob Troup -
"I heard, the other day that if a retiree`s spouse travels alone, her priority is reduced to
a C5. I cannot recall seeing this info on any of the netletters, and, according to our
travel booklet, this does not seem to be the case."
The answer we received from Industry Travel was -
" No, this is not correct. Spouses always carry the same personal priority of the
employee, whether accompanied by the employee or not."

. From Vesta our chief pilot -
Recently we have been overwhelmed with the numerous rejects being sent
to us by internet service providers because they cannot deliver our NetLetters.
In some cases it is because the mail box is full (excusable) but in most
cases it is because 'addressee unknown'.
It has come to my attention that many of the Free E-mails packages offered on the
Web are for a very limited time eg as short as 30 days, and then of course, there is
the offer to purchase.
If the FREE time runs out and no purchase is made, then the user is cut off,
sometimes without notice.
In last couple of months I have been counting these rejects in a data base file to the
count of three and then take the addressee off our servers mailing list.
This is a lot of extra e-paper work.
If you are serious about receiving The NetLetter twice a week in the future please
make sure you have a regular E-mail account, and keep your free e-mails accounts
for other internet mail.
FYI we have made over 100 changes to the servers mailing list this year alone and
only 7 months have past.
The production of the NetLetter is an enjoyable hobby for Terry and I.
Thank you for your attention.

. News from the districts.
From the London, England monthly newsletter -
On 26th March 1992, the first edition of the LHR newsletter was issued, and we
quote the first paragraph -
"Dear Fellow Pionair,
Joe Leonard and I (Jack Morath) have recently retires from Air Canada and, having
spoken to other retirees, feel that there is a need for information to be circulated to you.
With this in mind, we hope this newsletter will be the first of many, which will be
enclosed with your monthly payslip.
The most common 'complaint' is that you want to be kept informed of what is
happening and/or to get together with fellow retirees. We would be pleased to
hear your views/comments, along with any ideas/suggestions you may have."
The August edition of the newsletter is a milestone edition, marking the 100th. and
not one month has passed without an edition.
We congratulate the 'gang' in LHR who produce this newsletter.
Incidentally, their first three activities were a day trip to Nice on Air Canada, a visit to a
TV show and an unusual tour of London with a pub stop.
Upcoming events are -
Aug 14th - ACRA Riverboat shuffle
Sept 5th - ACRA Theatre trip 'Notre Dane de Paris"
Dec 4th - ACRA Christmas dinner
Dec 10th - Pionairs Christmas lunch.
On Nov 27-29th - UK Pionairs Trip to Niagara 2000. This trip is an annual affair to a
different venue each time, and has included Ottawa, Calgary,
Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Boston and Quebec City.

. We give you the final part of the story started in NetLetter nr 508 from Charles Mackie -
Anyway on one midnight shift myself and another chap named MacDonald
were doing our thing with the radios and it got pretty cold as we were upstairs in the
building, an old farmhouse, and the only heat came from a pot bellied stove downstairs,
which had a grate in the floor to let some of the heat get upstairs. The flue from the
stove also came up through the floor and ran around the room and then finally to the
chimney and that was supposed to heat up the upstairs.
This particular night obviously the stove went out and it was plenty cold up stairs
so MacDonald said he would go downstairs and start up the fire again.
All of a sudden there was a terrific explosion and the flue pipe split open and the
room filled with smoke and soot and I couldn't see a thing for about 2 minutes. I then
hurried downstairs to see how MacDonald had survived the blast and all I could see
was the whites of his eyes where he had taken his glasses off, the rest of him was
covered with thick soot and he had some singed hair. What he had done was to put the
vinyl shavings off the recording machines, into stove and of course they exploded as
soon as he put a match to them. By the way the downstairs of the old house was
used to make recordings of Tokyo Rose and other enemy broadcasts on great big vinyl
disks and they were sent downtown Ottawa for their information.
So there was no more monitoring done that night as we spent the rest of the night
cleaning up the mess repairing the upstairs pipes etc and I don't think anyone was any
the wiser for our experience.
But the sight of MaDonald and all I could see where the whites of his eyes will long
live in my memory.
The monitoring station also had the Frequency and Time Standard for Canada house
there and also it was a communications center to keep in touch with many station
throughout the arctic for weather information etc.
The old Booth Farm is long gone now and I understand they have a modern building
to house all those facilities now.
Best regards to all
Charles J. L. Mackie

Roots Air plans to start up service in November. According to the
National Post, Roots Air, an alliance between Toronto's Skyservice
Airlines Inc. and Roots, the Canadian retail outlet, will begin
operating its 13 aircraft fleet in November. Canada's newest airline
hopes its brand name will provide instant appeal. The Roots logo will
adorn the fuselage and the Roots beaver will be stitched into the
seats. They're also considering a reward program where Roots customers
could collect points redeemable for air travel.

. Smilies.
From David Edwards
The controller working a busy pattern told the 727 on downwind
to make a three-sixty (do a complete circle, usually to provide
spacing between aircraft). The pilot of the 727 complained, "Do
you know it costs us two thousand dollars to make a three-sixty
in this airplane?" Without missing a beat the controller replied,
"Roger, give me four thousand dollars worth!"
