Partner Pass
John Gallagher sent us this query -
It finally happened.
The agent noted my wife's pass indicated "wife". Since she was not an
employee, her Partner Pass dropped to C5/Y10 instead of my 40 year
priority. When upgrading to Biz Class, the agent said my wife could go but
there were employees with a higher priority and the partner would sit in
the back. In the past years this hasn't been a problem but the agent told
my wife they are starting to enforce this rule. I suppose a rule is a rule
is a rule.
We asked John for further details -
The imprint on my wife's pass states R-33080 WIFE P/C2Y10
She uses my priority of 39 yrs, 03 mths 22 days
BUT Since my wife was not an employee, the partner pass drops to C5/Y10
Other employees come first.
In the example if there are a dozen employees trying for the flight.
There are 6 empty seat in the back
There are 6 empty sets in the front. [Biz class]
My wife has the highest priority and is offered a seat in the front.
There are several employees with higher priority that the partner.
The partner would have a seat in the back
If I was with my wife and partner, all three of us would have C2Y10.
I phoned AC reservations and was told this is correct.
The answer from Industry Travel is -
The partner travel policy states that partners (max. of three) will
be carried on the same priority as the EMPLOYEE/RETIRED EMPLOYEE/
WIDOW/ER when travelling together with the employee or retired
employee or widow/er - BUT NOT WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY THE SPOUSE.
Transport Canada audits Air Canada for carry on baggage policy compliance. The results are in—and unfortunately, the news isn’t good because of our general lack of policy enforcement. To return to compliance with the policy, it’s imperative that we focus on the following initiatives: make gate announcements, challenge carry on baggage size at Check-in, and affix appropriate cabin baggage tags (ACF510D). Failure to comply with the policy may result in fines to the carriers and the employee who allows the oversize bag to be carried on board.

Air Canada Inaugurates Daily Non-Stop Service Between Halifax and Vancouver
Flights on the new route will be operated with Air Canada 112-seat A319
aircraft featuring the airline's acclaimed Executive and Hospitality service.
Air Canada flight AC113 (CP3113) leaves Halifax at 08:20 a.m. and arrives
in Vancouver at 10:35 a.m. From Vancouver, AC160 (CP3160) leaves at 2:05 p.m.
and arrives in Halifax at 11:45 p.m.
Air Canada inaugurates twice daily non-stop service between Montreal and Philadelphia
Flights on the new route will be operated with Air Canada 50-seat
Canadair Regional Jet aircraft.

Air Canada Inaugurates Daily Non-Stop Services Toronto-Ontario and Toronto-Austin
Flights on the new routes will be operated with Air Canada 112-seat A319.
Air Canada flight AC675 (CP3675/UA3050) leaves Toronto at 0930 and
arrives in Ontario at 1141. From Ontario, AC670 (CP3670/UA3067) leaves at
1240 and arrives in Toronto at 2025.
Air Canada flight AC1001 (CP4001/UA3171) leaves Toronto at 0835 and
arrives in Austin at 1105. From Austin, AC1002 (CP4002/UA3172) leaves at 1145
and arrives in Toronto at 1600.
Air Canada also inaugurated the transborder routes
Vancouver-Washington
Vancouver-Denver.
Star Alliance Partners Air Canada and Lufthansa Inaugurate Daily Non-Stop Service Between Toronto and Munich
Air Canada flight AC846/LH6845 leaves Toronto at 1925 and arrives in
Munich at 0930. From Munich, flight AC847/LH6844 departs at 1145 and arrives
in Toronto at 1440.
Air Canada will add its code on Lufthansa's flights to 13 European cities via Munich,
such as Stuttgart and Athens between Frankfurt and Prague.
Lufthansa offers its customers increased service on a codeshare basis from Toronto to
Montréal, Ottawa and Winnipeg. In addition, Lufthansa has added its code on Air
Canada's flights to Halifax, Québec City and Edmonton via Toronto.

Subject: Anniversary of Prairie Airmail
A simulation of the commencement of the prairie airmail service seventy
years ago was the opening highlight of the annual convention of the
Canadian Aviation Historical Society in Calgary recently. The Calgary-Medicine Hat leg
was reenacted in a homebuilt 1929 Fokker Super Universal by pilot member
Clark Seaborn from the Indus grass airport.
Officials in 1930 costumes drove up in front of ten antique cars to transfer mail from a
postal truck of that era. The event was covered by local media and got the convention
off to a great start.
Pilots on the early 1930 service included WW1 ace Don MacLaren and Antarctic flyer
H. Hollick-Kenyon, early employees of TCA.

Plans for new Canadian airline announced
A new Canadian airline geared for business
travelers and serving eight Canadian cities as well as Los Angeles will
begin flying in November, the company chairman announced Wednesday. Russell
Payson, who is also chief executive officer of Skyservice Airlines Inc.,
refused to disclose the name of the airline that would fly to major Canadian
cities and Los Angeles in the United States with Airbus A320 and A330
aircraft. He said details about the new airline would be revealed in coming
weeks as the company secures $34 million in financing to purchase more
aircraft for a fleet expected to total 18 wide-body and narrow-body
jetliners. The announcement came as the Canadian airline industry continued
its transformation after Air Canada last year consumed its main rival
Canadian Airlines. Complaints of poor service and scheduling snafus have
hounded Air Canada in recent weeks.

Subject: Remember when ?
Re your article; Remember when ? in Netletter #489, I very distinctly remember that flight
portion, Stephenville, Halifax, Montreal, however with different types of aircraft than those
mentioned.
The following story of my very first trip, traveling as a "Con" on a Company vacation pass
turned out to become the worst experience in memory.
The year was 1959 and my late wife, myself and two young infants left Montreal for Brussels,
Belgium on a Super Connie (13 hours non stop). After vacationing in Europe, we arrived in London, England expecting to return to our home base, Montreal, that day.
Arriving at the ticket counter we learned that all flights had been backed up for days on
account of the annual Farnborough air show and none of the 35 cons, including us, would
get on that day.
As it turned out, very few of us got out during the next five days, which saw us spending days
and nights in the terminal and eating in employee cafeterias. After five exhausting days I
opted for a London, Gander flight which would continue on to Western Canada. Arriving late
at night in Gander, we slept in old barrack style facilities. The following morning got us on the
Gander, Stephenville, Sydney, Halifax milkrun by Viscount. When reaching Sydney, we got
bumped once again but were assured for the early afternoon flight.
One hour before departure time I learned the flight to be sold out once more. As we were
more dead than alive by this time I made an instant decision and purchased four 50% positive
space tickets for the evening flight on a North Star aircraft which brought us home finally after a
seven day delay.
The point of my story is that only Viscounts and North Stars were flying those routes then and
to the best of my recollection, DC-9 and B727 aircraft did not come into service until the 70's.

"Wild Kid"
As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace is shattered by
a 5-year-old boy who picks that moment to throw a wild temper tantrum.
No matter what his frustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calm
him down, the boy continues to scream furiously and kick the seats
around him.
Suddenly, from the rear of the plane, an elderly man in the uniform of
an Air Force General is seen slowly walking forward up the aisle.
Stopping the flustered mother with an upraised hand, the white-haired,
courtly, soft-spoken General leans down and, motioning toward his
chest, whispers something into the boy's ear.
Instantly, the boy calms down, gently takes his mother's hand, and
quietly fastens his seat belt. All the other passengers burst into
spontaneous applause.
As the General slowly makes his way back to his seat, one of the cabin
attendants touches his sleeve. "Excuse me, General," she asks quietly,
"but could I ask you what magic words you used on that little boy?"
The old man smiles serenely and gently confides, "I showed him my
pilot's wings, service stars, and battle ribbons, and explained that
they entitle me to throw one passenger out the plane door on any
flight I choose."
