I am looking for the address of Brian Dixon whom I knew with Air Canada.
We also got our private pilot licences together at Cranbrook BC somewhere
in the pre-Cambrian past. I've discovered that Brian and I have a mutual
friend at Grand Forks BC where I live and I've promised to locate Brian's
whereabouts.
I hope this will not be too great a task.

An Air Canada 112-seat A319 will be the first aircraft to use

. Anyone visiting Thailand?
Subject: "SAWADEE" from "THE LAND OF SMILES" Thailand.

Having just returned from the "Land Of Smiles" beautiful Thailand,
I hope you will allow Jean and I to share with your readers what a
beautiful experience we so much enjoyed. We highly recommend at some
time every AC and CP employee and retiree take advantage of this
opportunity. It is our opinion that Thailand is one of the very best
bargains for the Canadian dollar and relatively easy to access from Canada.
This was primarily the reason we decided upon Thailand and were convinced
it was for us after viewing the "Ko Samui" website.
(www.kosamui.net/peace/) and Peace Bungalow at Bo Phut Beach was our choice.

You may also access Ko Samui via the internet searching out
"Thailand Hotels and Resorts".
We travelled contingent standby via CP #7 YVRHKG, a full up B747 400,
enjoying excellent/superb service enroute, and upon arrival HKG
made an immediate connection to a Thai B747 and we were on our way to BKK,
where we stopped overnite at a modest and inexpensive airport hotel.
The following am at 1030 we boarded a Thai Airbus, (we purchased
50% positives for this leg) and after a short one hour flight we arrived
at Surat Thani, a small city on the eastern shores of southern Thailand.
At the airport we purchased bus and ferry tickets and shortly were on
our way (two hours) to the car ferry and a (one hour) ferry ride.
Upon arrival at Nathon the capital city of Ko Samui we boarded a very
unique local taxi/bus, a halfton pickup truck with roof & seating in the
box for 18, and another 6 standing on the tailgate, and twenty minutes
later arrived at Peace Bungalow, our residence for the next two weeks.
(Fare approx 50B or $2.00 each).
Peace Bungalow is comprised of about 40 bungalows, many of which are
very modern and new. Each unit is a mini suite, and ours was identified
as a Superior Garden Bungalow, Air Conditioned, and containing a large
circulating ceiling fan, small fridge, king size bed, sitting room,
modern north American style bathroom with tub and hot/cold water shower
and conventional toilet. In addition we enjoyed a deck/veranda for
relaxing in the evening after a day in the sun. There are also Beach View
and Beach Bungalows available at higher per day rates. Peace Bungalow is
locally owned and operated and situated on a beautiful beach,
(Bo Phut at the north/east end of the island and approximately three miles
in length), and of course the weather and water are superb.
The dining room is an out door pavilion type situated beachside where
you enjoy sundown and perhaps a full moon during dinner. The menu is a la
carte for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and extremely reasonable. American
style breakfasts, or Thai, with many choices of fruit are favorites at
breakfast whereas salads and sandwiches and a cold beer are popular at
lunch, and at dinner there are always three specials and a choice of local
fish or typical Thai dishes, and of course wine if preferred.
There are many activities and opportunities to move about by way of jeep
and motor cycle rentals, scuba and snorkling, and boat trips to the nearby
islands and most important the facilities are excellent for the little
people. A day trip around the island to view the other beaches and
hotels/bungalows, both low, medium and 5 star accommodation is a great
adventure and very pleasing to the eye and camera, and shopping and
bartering is the accepted manner of purchase and fun to do also.
The best news is the low cost in terms of Canadian dollars.
Peace Bungalow offers a 15% discount off rack rates to airline staff and
retirees. Our Superior Garden Bungalow was 1400B per day, (approx $62.00)
and our daily food and bar costs averaged 800B,
(approx $35.00 for three meals for two persons daily), and these rates
include all gratuities and taxes.
Another piece of good news is the building of an inground pool at Peace
Bungalow in August 2000, although in my view the salt water and the beach
is all you really need.
Our time was up and departure day was approaching. We decided on
Bangkok Air departing Ko Samui at 0730 for BKK, approximately a one hour
flight and a mite expensive, a change of terminals from Domestic to
International at BKK via shuttle bus, immediate checkin and subsequently
boarded a Cathay Airbus and we were on our way to HKG, where again another
immediate connection the same day to CP # 8 and at 1450 we were enroute
to YVR where we arrived at 0945 am the same day and only two hours after
departing beautiful Ko Samui.

Jean and I were two weeks on Koh Samui, and the time disappeared so
quickly we wished it was a four week jaunt. Maybe next year.
The best time is January through September. The monsoons hit in the
late fall and over December so consider the best time to go is when its
horrible in BC.

WOMEN IN AVIATION CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON JOBS, JOBS, JOBS...
Women are still scarce in the aviation world -- ranging from less than
2% of maintenance techs to about 25% of NASA's astronaut corps -- but
they sure made a lot of noise in Memphis, Tenn., this weekend, where
more than 3,000 of them got together to network, mentor, learn, job-hunt
and schmooze. With a booming economy and a surplus of jobs for pilots
and technical workers, these are heady times for Women in Aviation
International (WAI), as airlines and industry crowded the convention in
search of qualified women to fill their rosters -- and the women were
ready, many arriving with resumes in hand.
The Royal International Air Tattoo this year is being switched from
R.A.F. Fairford in Gloucestershire, UK to R.A.F. Cottismore in
Leicestershire, UK. Dates are July 22nd and 23rd.
Ryanair a UK low fare airline is increasing its daily flights from
Luton to Dublin from 4 to 10. Promotional fare is GBP3.99 plus tax.

Heathrow. One noticed he had an eye for a good place to hang his
rolled-up brolly - in the towelled cleavage of one of the blondes.
Had he removed his unusual headgear - a bowler hat - one can only
