There appears to be some confusion over the carry-on baggage limitations,
the original sizes noted on the ticket folders was -
Under seat storage: No more than two pieces which, when combined, do
not exceed 23 cm x 56 cm x 57 cm (9" x 22" x 22.5").
The current ticket folder now has sizes -
Hospitality service : One standard piece and one business article.
A standard piece cannot exceed 23 cm x 40 cm x 55 cm in size or
weigh more than 10 kgs.
A business article e.g. briefcase or laptop computer cannot exceed
more than 10 kgs.
Tom Grant makes these observations -
Just in case your readers have been spending sometime poring over
catalogues or shopping the malls to try to get that carry-on luggage that
fits the dimensions given in Dec/Jan Horizons, I have some bad new and some
good news. The bad news: you have been wasting your time. You won't find a
piece that comes reasonably close - not even the Air Canada brand at Sears.
The good news: the dimensions given were wrong. And now you can go back out
and shop. Check out http://www.aircanada.ca/services/carry-on.html for the
"real" dimensions.
I wonder what would happen if a passenger bought a new primary carry-on
piece of luggage conforming to the max dimensions of Air Canada's new
policy and then travelled on the other Star Alliance partners.
As it turns out there are no two dimension policies that are the same when
specifying exact perimeter dimensions. However when setting a total max.
perimeter, Thai, Air NZ and ANA all have the same at 115 inches. Air Canada
has one of the best (largest) dimensions along with Lufthansa and SAS, with
Ansett being the least generous. But Air Canada's would not be accepted on
Lufthansa, 1" too deep; on UAL, 1.5" too wide and overall 1" over the
total; on Ansett 2.5" too wide and 2.5" too long. And it goes on . . . And
as for Varig, I couldn't find the information on their website. I'm not
sure what that says for their carry-on policy.
When it comes to weight, Air Canada is generous with 10 kg, while Air NZ
has a miserly 5 kg. But the kicker here is UAL, it allows almost 23 kg -
what do their passengers carry? I guess they have on-staff physio therapist
for the FA's.
The numbers and type of the secondary piece, where allowed, also varies
with airline and with class. Again Air Canada is one of the more generous,
altho' your garment bag better be traded in for a briefcase.
The bottom line is that your new primary carry-on better be fLeXiBle! At
some connection it will have to lose up to 2.5" in length or 2.5" in width
or 1" in depth. Just like a being a passenger I guess. Tuck those legs in
on one flight, sit ram-rod straight on another, or if, like our carry-on,
you are fortunate enough to travel Air Canada Executive, you can relax and
let it all hang out ;-)

Time travelling machine

PASSENGERS and crew aboard Cathay Pacific flight CX888 from Hong
Kong to Vancouver were some of the first people in the world to
travel into the future millennium, before returning a few minutes
later to the previous century.
The plane departed from Hong Kong International Airport at 1.42pm
Hong Kong time on Friday December 31, with approximately 120
passengers on board. The aircraft flew into January 1, 2000 at a
point just west of the international dateline (longitude 180
degrees) over the mid-Pacific Ocean.
A few minutes later, it flew over the international dateline back
into 1999. The aircraft was scheduled to arrive in Vancouver at
20:55 local time, giving passengers plenty of time to prepare
for a second and more lasting celebration on terra firma.
Before the flight departed Captain Malcolm Lewendon said: "It's
quite exciting to make a little piece of history like this. But
most of our passengers will probably sleep through it."
The only people who could have beaten the Cathay Pacific flight
into the new millennium were those on any other aircraft which were
stationed close to the international dateline at midnight. It is
also possible that people may have been visiting one of the tiny
atolls located east of Fiji around which the international dateline
juts out to the east.

Boeing has delivered the first two 717-200 airliners to Bavaria
Inter-national Aircraft Leasing Company. The two aircraft will be
leased to Olympic Aviation, based in Athens. They will become the
first operator of the 717 in Europe and will use them primarily out
of a base at Thessaloniki to Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Munich, Paris,
Stuttgart, and Larnaca.

The controller was working a busy pattern told the 727 on downwind to
make a three-sixty (do a complete circle, usually to provide spacing
between aircraft).
The pilot of the 727 complained, "Do you know it costs us two
thousand dollars to make a three-sixty in this airplane?
Without missing a beat the controller replied,
"Roger, give me four thousand dollars worth!"
PSA was following United, taxiing out for departure. PSA called the
tower and said "Tower, this is United 586. We've got a little problem,
so go ahead and let PSA go first".
The tower promptly cleared PSA for takeoff before United had a chance
to object to the impersonation.
