. Philip Pawsey sends us a story -
My friend Alan MacLeod put CF-TCC to bed in WG a few weeks ago after a
visit to Kelowna. Alan bought a Cessna 170C (made in 1956) a few months
ago and I went with him to the Guelph area to pick it up last week, it had
been hangared at the Guelph Aero Park which I must say is a very impressive
facility.
The highlight of the trip was a long evening with Don (Smoke) Patrydwhom
you may know was a bush pilot back in the thirties and flew for Grant
McConachie.
Smoke is 85 now and truly is an inspiration to us old guys because he
remains so active and enjoys life along with his wife Irene so much.
Al and I got the last two seats on AC415-4 Nov YUL-YYZ and then took the
bus from Pearson to Guelph. Phoned Smoke Patry upon arrival and within ten
minutes he picked us up at the motel. We planned to stay for one drink
but did not leave until 2300 after a very pleasant visit and dinner.
That Smoke is truly amazing in the detail that he can remember bush
flying and later flying experiences. As you probably know, he had many near
ones in the bush and he can even remember passenger names.
I liked the one where he was forced down on a lake because the end of a
intake valve had broken off and he was able to file it and valve guide down
and get operational again.
He also remembers something that he rather forget and that was on his
retirement trip in the DC8 with family and friends on board. He made the
worst landing at YYZ that he remembers making during his entire career.
It didn't drop the O2 masks but darn near to that.
His wife Irene is just as delightful and being that she comes from near to
where I was brought up on the prairies made it even more interesting for me.
Anyway from Guelph the C170 got us to Ken Patry's airstrip about 15 mins
east in fact it is located within yards of the Kleinburg VOR site and
what a spread he has. There are about four homes which own and operated
the strip. Ken has his C185 plus three aircraft that he is re building in
his hangar. Ken is now flying the B747-400.
After a coffee there we proceeded to Kingston, the Capt insisted I keep
an air plot and howgozit chart but he would not let me bring my sextant
and sight reduction tables account weight limitations. A sandwich at
Kingston and then on to the Cornwall airport where Al will hangar the
a/c for the winter. Donalda, Al's wife, picked us up at the airport and
then back to Hudson where I had the pickup to take me home - all in all
and very enjoyable trip.
Al is a most relaxed fellow to fly with but he made the mistake of asking
me to do the takeoff at Kingston and I made the mistake of accepting.
Instead of getting it lined up for takeoff, I did an ultralight power turn
on to the runway and then was so busy trying to establish a center line
takeoff that I forgot to get the tail up - anyway with a couple of inputs
from the left seat we got into the air and on our way.
Hope I have not bored you but isnt the Delete button a wonderful thing on
some of these messages.
Phil Pawsey.

. Tom Grant sends this -
Review of one the Christmas gift books I noted a couple of issues ago.
I just got it from the library and would recommend its purchase to anyone
who is a WW2 aircraft buff.
COCKPIT: An Illustrated History of World War II Aircraft Interiors.
Donald Nijboer and Dan Paterson.
Boston Mills Press, Erin Ontario, 1998.
There is only one word that describes this book and its photographs -
superb! The format is by country (UK, US, Japan, USSR, Germany) with the
following sections: Initial thumbnail photos of the aircaft covered (37).
The coverage consists of a history of the aircraft with photos (b&w and
colour), a pilot's perspective with an instrument layout photo, and a
full-page colour photo of the cockpit interior. It is difficult to describe
in words an illustrated work, so if the readers would like to get a taste,
I direct them to the "Bulletin Board" page of the A-Crew website where I
have put up some sample images. Please be aware that the scanned images do
not do the photos justice.
Cheers, Tom
