Subject: Books of Remembrance
Hello everyone,
Since it is November 11th, I pass along this website Lest We Forget
<http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/books/remember.htm>
"The Books of Remembrance contain the names of Canadians who fought in wars
and died either during or after them. All the books are kept in the
Memorial Chamber located in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill.
The purpose of creating a site that displays these books on the Internet
is to make them more accessible to the public.
Quite aptly named are these testaments to Canada's past, for by their
very title they remind us to never forget the foundations of courage on
which Canada is built. "

. Cliff Jones-Cassidy sends us a short bio -
I joined Air Canada as a navigator in 1967 and switched to the pilot
group in 1974 and retired as a first officer on the B-747-400 about 5 years
ago. I chose to retire two years early after recovering from lung cancer
surgery.
As I mentioned in my previous note, I currently am the assistant editor
of the RAPCAN (Retired Airlines Pilots of Canada) Newsletter.

. We have another story from Bill Norberg for you -
Subject: North Star communication problems over the Atlantic.
It was not long after the North Star entered regular service over the
Atlantic when serious communication problems began to arise. There were a
number of occasions when the flights were out of radio contact for
significant periods of time. This was unacceptable to all and TCA was told
to fix the problem or have the flights routed in such a manner that
communication could be maintained with ground stations. I am sure
Al Blackwood will remember this period in his overseas flying.
This possibility was of course not acceptable to TCA and they set up a
technical team to solve the problem. The members of this team were Jim
Millar, Harold Ferris and Fred Smith along with help from the radio shop
staff. Their centre of operations was the screen room in the Dorval radio
shop.
The communication equipment on the North Star as I remember it at that time
consisted of:-
-VHF Transceiver RT18ARC1 Voice
-HF Transceiver RTA1B Voice/CW
-MF/LF Transmitter TA12G11 CW
The VHF of course had line of sight capabilities and was basically used at
terminal areas. The HF unit was a 10 channel unit and was the main unit
used for enroute communications. The aircraft was equipped with two
antennas, one from the top of the cockpit area to the top of the vertical
fin while the other went to the left hand horizontal stabilizer.
The problem was identified as being one of antenna matching and a manual
loading unit was developed that would match the antenna accurately to the
transmitter. They also grounded the two antennas to the fuselage at the fin
and stabilizer. To operate this system the loading unit was set to the same
channel number as the transceiver and then the loading unit was tuned for
dip on an RF meter. This solved the problem.
Once the problem was defined an automatic loading unit was developed which
replaced the manual unit and tuning was automatically done when channels
were changed.

. Remember when?
From the 'Between Ourselves' 1966 kindly loaned by Kitch Olson.
A picture titled 'Around the world in 80 days' is about to be repeated
as Bermuda records the selling of its first 'Round the World Ticket'.
The 'ticket' was infact 49 flight tickets that covered 22 countries on
an 80-day tour. Holding the ticket was Barry Blight, District Manager
Bermuda and Rita Johnson, Passenger Agent.
(Obviously prior to 'ticketless travel' eds)
May 10th 1966 marked the 25th anniversary of scheduled flights to
New York. It was May 10th 1941 when a TCA Lockheed 1808 CF-TCW arrived at
New York's La Guardia airport after a 2 hour flight from Toronto,
Captain for the flight was Frank Young.

Asked by an irate passenger, on an international flight, why cigarettes
can be bought but not smoked on the aircraft, the alert flight attendant
