Stiff upper lip!
The Captain of a flight on British Airways' low cost airline GO
detained all 148 passengers on-board his aircraft after arriving
at Milan recently. The passengers were kept on-board 40 minutes
after someone was accused of smoking in the toilet. However, Italian
police boarded the aircraft and detained the Captain for holding
the passengers against their will. GO backed the Captain for not
being willing to compromise passenger safety.
The Halifax International Airport Authority is nearing completion
of negotiations with Transport Canada to transfer control of
Halifax International Airport to the local authority.
AIRCRAFT ORDERS
Australian regional carrier Kendell Airlines has signed an order for
12 Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet CL-65-200s and took options
on a further 12. The order from Kendell has a symbolic value for the
Canadian manufacturer because it propels the total number of orders received
for its Regional Jet beyond 500 units.
US flag carrier TWA (TW) has announced an order for four 757-200
aircraft from Boeing. The five aircraft will join the airline's current
fleet of the type and boost it to 27 aircraft by January 2000.
AIRLINE DEREGULATION TURNS 20
Happy Birthday, dereg! Yes, boys and girls, airline deregulation turned
20 last week. The landmark law has given airline travelers everything
from Air Florida, People Express, and ValuJet to hub-and-spoke systems,
frequent-flyer programs, and the demise of Braniff and Pan Am. In the
bargain, travelers have seen fare wars, reduced seat pitch, carry-on
restrictions, and one-class service, all in the name of increased
competition.
HOLD THE PICKLES, HOLD THE LETTUCE, NOISY CHOPPERS DON'T UPSET US...
That $100 hamburger just got easier to find, at least in the UK. But
fixed-wing pilots need not apply, since this new stop is only open for
helicopters. Instead, the Burger King Corporation and a franchisee have
opened the world's first "Fly Thru" fast food restaurant. The pair have
installed a 19-1/2-foot "Whopper Chopper" helipad in London, enabling
helicopter pax and crew to pop in for a snack.

. Brian Dunn in Toronto sends us some aviation news -
Prime Air of British Columbia is trying to raise money in the
capital markets to spend on upgrading the Pemberton airport runway and
to develop a terminal facility.
Pemberton airport will serve the Whistler ski resorts and air service
will be provided under contract to Prime Air by Voyageur Airways using
DHC-7s. The planned air service is required because the road trip from
Vancouver takes 2 1/2 hrs and the road is often closed due to rock
slides, washourts, and severe winter weather. Prime Air will offer
scheduled services from Vancouver as well as Seattle directly to
Pemberton.
Air Canada handed over another DC-9-32 to Cebu Pacific Air on
October 20th. The aircraft did an acceptance flight at 1600hrs at
Montreal-Dorval airport, then was flown out by Cebu crew later that
night on delivery. I personally saw the aircraft take-off on its
acceptance flight in the funky Cebu colour scheme. The aircraft in
question was ex- C-FTMO -FLN740. On October 22nd 747-133 C-FTOD was
observed outside the hangars at Dorval devoid of any titles or logo. It
is anticipated that this aircraft will ferry to Marana Arizona next
week.

. Terry's travel tips.
Frank Takasaki and his wife took a cruise recently, and this is his report -
Just got back from our Princess cruise from Vancouver to Beijing via
Juneau, Seward, Dutch Harbour Alaska, Hokkaido Japan, Vladivostock
Russia, Pusan Korea and Beijing China. We booked the cruise with
Canadian Interline on the Sky Princess which was 19 days long. We were
fortunate in getting an upgrade resulting in a mini-suite on the Lido
deck which made the trip very enjoyable particularly on the 5 days at
sea between Alaska and Japan. The weather in Alaska was a bit chilly
but not too cold. It was very comfortable by the time we got to Japan.
We also had Canadian Interline book a five day ground tour of Beijing
for us and it was both cheaper than that offered by the Cruise Line, but
it turned out that we were the only ones on the tour so we had a guide
and a driver to ourselves for the whole tour. It was a very
personalized tour and we enjoyed it immensely. We were very pleased
with the service provided by Canadian Interline.
That's about it for now. Regards, Frank

. Smilie.
This shows that some airlines answer to an even higher authority than
the FAA:
A passenger recently took a domestic flight in Egypt on their national
carrier, Egyptair. As he boarded the aging B737, he looked over the door
at the frame where the airworthiness and registration certificates are
normally found. Instead, the carrier had placed a copy of the Koran there.
Made the passenger feel much safer!
