You had "We welcome - Norm Danton retired Passenger Sales lives in
Vancouver
Twice I have tried contacting Norm and each time I got "Returned
mail:User unknown" Is there something I have missed?
Norm was our tour guide on a trip to the British Isles and a trip to
the orient which my wife and I had been on with a group of Pionairs.
After he had given being the operator for the trips my wife and I had
been on an Australia/New Zealand/Fiji trip with the Pionairs and some
Peterborough, Ontario GE retirees on which my wife passeed away very
suddenly in Melbourne, Australia. Since this happened six years ago I
have been tying unsuccessfully ever since to contact Norm. I thought at
last I was going to be able to make contact.

HOUSE APPROVES Y2K BILL
The U.S. House of Representative has voted 407-3 to authorize the
president's Council on the Year 2000 Conversion to take control of
computer systems of critical agencies if they're unlikely to be able to
avert a crisis because of the Year 2000 software problem, in which old
programs using 2-digit codes for years will be unable to do correct date-
based calculations. The Senate has not yet voted on the measure.

Here is Ian's account of Pionairs-USA fall meeting:
The U.S. Pionairs held their fall meeting October 1- 4 at the Marriott in
Walnut Creek, California. Twenty-nine attended the business meeting,
addressed by Olie Moore, National Pionairs President, and Douglas Lovat,
Director of Pensions and Employee Benefits. Thirty-four attended our group
dinner, 26 went on an excellent Napa Valley wine country tour, and four
golfers did some hooking and slicing. All attendees were enthusiastic about
the event, as many stories of long ago flew around the hospitality suite.

The London England Pionairs annual jaunt this year is the Boston Bonanza,
when some 35 UK Pionairs and friends plus 11 from Canada will meet
November 3/4th staying at the Days Inn Saugus (781)233-1800
Plans already in the works for the next annual trip called Viva Vancouver,
destination a secret!

On Aug 27th, about 74 Pionairs and friends turned out on a beautiful day
for the races at Woodbine Racetrack where the group enjoyed the buffet
lunch, but no sign of any big winners!

Burloak Coffee meetings -
The Oakville/Burlington and vicintity Pionairs hold a coffee break
on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Pig & Whistle at Burloak
Dr and Lakeshore Road in Burlington starts at 11.00 to 12.00. Contact

31 Pionairs from Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga and Brampton
enjoyed golf at the Rock Chapel Golf centre recently.

. Brian Dunn keeps us abreast of happenings at Toronto -
Air Canada flew the first of three 747-133s to Marana Arizona on
October 15th when C-FTOE departed Montreal(YUL) for MZJ via Tucson.
C-FTOD is expected to follow shortly and C-FTOC later in the month.
Canada 3000 will be moving from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 on or about
November 1st.
US Airways is expected to follow with a move to T3 near the end of November.

. Here's a memory from Bob Troup -
Subject: Viscount Memories
Looking over some of the past netletters, I came across one from Bill Sim,
#317 to be exact, and it brought to mind a job we had to perform on the
inside of the infamous Viscount wing. A small doubler had to be inserted in
an area above the wheel-well. The operation had to provide a 90% blueing
contact with the parent surface, and this required a Cat17 mechanic on top
of the wing and another in a very constricted space above the landing gear.
There were only two of us in the shop who, for reasons of stature or lack
of claustrophobia, qualified for this operation. In the winter the one who
lost the toss found himself squeezed into this tiny opening with his lower
extremities half frozen, while sweating bullets as he filed away, with the
aid of a rather hot lamp inches from his face. My compatriot in this
unforgettable exercize was Charlie Pungent. Happy days ?

STUPID PET TRICKS I: HOLY CARRY-ON, BATMAN!
No home run story, this. Instead, the bat involved is the small,
furry kind, its exact species unknown.
It was noticed flitting about the cabin of an Air Canada 747
en route to London's Heathrow from Toronto. Speculation is that one of
the passengers brought it aboard in carry-on luggage but (surprise!) no
one owned up to it. A crewmember eventually caught the flying rodent
and bagged it for the duration. Tragically, the bat did not survive.
FLYING UNDER A FALSE FLAG?
A Maryland man charged with theft and fraud misrepresented himself as an
airline pilot and managed to obtain numerous rides in jump seats over a
three-year period, prosecutors say.
Daniel Shykind, who wore a United Airlines uniform, but apparently never
had any flight training, chatted up real pilots about procedures,
airplanes and investments.
The last airworthy Bristol Britannia - Whispering Giant - flew into Kemble
Airport UK last year on Oct 14th 1997. The Britannia first flew Aug 1952.

. Ross Smyth has promised us some stories, -
Re your request for stories, I have dozens but here is a pre-TCA
one.
In 1938 I hitch-hiked in the Kawartha Lakes district of Ontario from
Bobcaygeon to Minden to work at a big picnic. My job was selling rides at
$2.00 in a Tiger Moth on floats. The pilot decided to put on a bombing
exhibition and asked for my help. I ran a small outboard zig-zagging as he
dropped the bombs towards me. They were nickel popcorn boxes filled with
sand. Thank goodness none hit me on the head.

. Remember when?
From the 1966 'Between Ourselves' loaned courtesy of Kitch Olson -
First Atlantic Provinces Air Freight Terminal opened at Moncton.
Opened May 1966, included in the building is the Millwright Shop.
July 1st marked the 20th anniversary of scheduled services to Chicago.
On July 1st 1946, TCA inaugurated service between Toronto and Chicago,
with the 21 passenger DC-3 airliner CF-TDZ.
Worlds first Airline Stewardess, Ellen Church Marshall of United Airlines
is commemorated with a plaque in the lobby of the United Airlines
flight attendants training centre near Chicago.

. Terry's travel tips.
Train to the plane -
A rail link in Denmark from Copenhagen International Airport to the
Central Railway Station downtown opened recently. The trip takes 11 minutes
and costs approximately ca$5.00, compared to the taxi fare of ca$40.00
The train terminal is under the airport departure and arrival halls.
Julio Seiz has a comment regarding the Mexicana Fiesta Fare mentioned
in NetLetter nr 318 -
Item about Mexicana. I hope that, in addition to all those good things
they are planning to do to get closer to Air Canada, they will also
cancel their restriction to travel on the Z fare YUL-MEX-YUL.
Since their inaugural flight on this route I have traveled several
times on their 90% and Z fares. To my great surprise, on Oct.3 I was
denied issuance of a Z pass on this route by the Dorval agent (after
Winnipeg had taken my request and given a locator number) due to that
restriction. I don't know if the YYZ-MEX-YYZ is also restricted.
