. Help!
Joe Lee is looking for some information -
Subject: duty free
Hi, My wife and I are traveling to Man from YYZ and it has been 8 years
since we went overseas,  Years ago when we checked in at YYZ they
took our luggage and gave us temporary boarding passes to get thru
security  . We then stopped at duty free and proceeded to the gate for
standby.  Can anyone tell me if this is still the same, we would hate to
miss out on duty free now with the pound at what it is.   Many thanks

. More info on the Desert Jets we mentioned in NetLetter nr 311 & 312 -
Alan Rust tells us -

Actually, I was wondering about it myself as I was looking for the Desert
AC when I visited Arizona in April. As noted below, I was refused entry to
the Pinal Air Park. Following the directions Tom Grant takes us to the
images but the URL for the pages and text below is:
http://members.aol.com/airnikon/dezjets.htm
Even then, he doesn't say exactly where the AC aircraft are located....
The following is the text found on the above link.
http://members.aol.com/airnikon/dezjets.htm
A photo gallery of jets parked at desert airports in various stages of
storage, conversion, and/or dismantlement. Primarily B-707s and DC-8s at
Marana (MZJ), Davis-Monthan AFB (DMA), Mohave (MHV), and Las Vegas (LAS).
Most pics were shot in the mid-Eighties before competition heated-up and
everybody got paranoid.
The shots at Evergreen Air Center in Marana (near Tucson, Arizona) would
not have been possible without the assistance of one Arnold "Schnozz" Mayer.
A truly cool dude, he ran the place. Sadly, The Schnozz isn't with us
anymore, and Pinal Air Park is sealed-up tighter than Tupperware!
Davis-Monthan (also in Tucson) used to have an all-day tour on the second
Saturday of each month, but I don't think they still do. D-M does conduct free
public tours weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays at 0900 and 1030. It's a
narrated tour that takes about an hour (no comparison to the eight-hour
marathon they used to have).
Mohave? Forget it! They are unfriendly and very uncooperative!
If you're ever in the Phoenix/Tucson area, the Pima Air & Space Museum is
right across the street from Davis-Monthan and has just about anything on
display, inside and out.
The Arizona Spotter's Page is an excellent source for info about "what's
where" and "where to go" in the Desert Southwest. Check it out!
The airlines listed represent the last recognizable operator, and not
necessarily the owner of the aircraft at the time the picture was taken.

. Message from John Gallagher who asked about the airplane graveyard
in NetLetter 311
Hi there, Between Yourselves NetLetter readers,
Can you place a "thank you" note from me.
I asked about old transports and receive at least two dozen replies.
I now have more than enough information to write a dozen novels.
My novel is about my 40 years as a pilot with Air Canada and my 30 years
as an Aircraft Accident Investigator.... and you are all in it!.... so
you will have to buy it! Thank you all.

. Here's a bio from Don Muir -
I started with TCA in what was called Div 5 ,mtce Nov. 51 at YWG. Because
of rapid expansion in that div. I was a Lead Mechanic by '53 and before it
closed in the summer of '55  a temporary Asst.. Foreman. While waiting for
a call to the permanent staff I went North as a flight engineer on a Canso.
The flying at first was on the Mid Canada Line(RADAR) out of railway
distribution points ,The Pas and Moosonee, to sites along the 50th parallel.
Latter on the DEW line we flew out of sea lift points(Millville Pen. and
Frobisher) to sites near bodies of water but no runways yet. Flying south
from north of 65 to keep ahead of freeze up we ended summer flying in Oct
at YWG.
Speaking about freeze up, on departing Moosonee I had to climb out
on the cat walk to scrape the ice off the props as the river was warmer
than the air.(wish I could hang out in mid air like that now) This
excursion north cost me my call back to TCA as I was unavailable. So off to
the north again by Christmas, with a C47 bought from TCA. We changed a few
things for flying  north of '65(don't all mtce dept change things). One of
the changes was the oil tanks, we wanted the originals to facilitate oil
dilution(for the Arctic). The long and short of it was that out over the
Hudson Bay I learned very quickly why the TCA tanks (which needed only 12
gal oil) had de-aerating baffles installed , both engine oil  low
pressure lights were starting to flash. No problem deciding which engine to
shut down, with two lights flashing and only two engines to choose from-
Keep on trucking.
Once safely on the ground we went back to the original quantities of oil
for that tank.
Sorry, this is supposed to be about TCA-A/C- well the C47 was a TCA
aircraft.
After a short sojourn with Canada's other national carrier  as a
maintenance engineer(licensed mechanic) I returned home to TCA as a flight
engineer on the Connie in 1957. Based in YUL and YVR ,I contacted polio in
the spring of 1960, so ended my flying.
I was off pay-roll for three months. I don't mention that for a pity party
but because if any of this bio is sent out I would like to let people know
how people help people.
A fund was set up for me, and the flight engineers from YUL and YVR along
with the pilots and flight attendants from YVR that I had flown, with
donated money so that I did not go behind during those months off pay-roll.
Sept. '60 saw me starting back to work in dispatch at YVR. There was an
opening for an asst. dispatcher in YWG , so off we went. In 1968 there was
an opening for a dispatcher in YUL so off we went again.
Times change and so did dispatch. Consolidation of dispatch to one office
began in 1977 and off we went again, this time to YYZ. While in YYZ  I was
involved with the Dispatcher's Association. Another learning experience.
There is the technical side of consolidation and there is the human side
that needs adjusting to as well.
I retired in the spring of 1990, and stayed on in Brampton. Quite something
for a Westerner, raised to hate the CPR and Bay/St.James St. Now here I am
in Upper Canada.

. News from the Districts -

In NetLetter nr 294 Sheila Moscoe told us they were starting T2 Coffee
Klatches for airport sales retirees at Toronto. Sheila sends this update -
Well, about a dozen people showed up for the T2 coffee klatch.
Unfortunately, I was out of town before and after so I couldn't jump on
the band wagon and remind the pionairs about it.  However, those who
attended had a great time and even stayed for lunch.  We are looking
forward to our second get together on the 6th October.  I will be in
town and will  get on the phone and remind everyone.  So thanks for
asking, and thanks for putting the info in the netletter.  It is greatly
appreciated.  I would like to thank Nellie Collins, Maureen Screen and
Dona Brydges (yes, one "N") for helping out in my absence.
