St Catharines have a weekly get together at the Sweets & Crepes Cafe on
Ontario St at Lakeport. Every Wednesday at 10 AM a small group of us meet up
to solve some of the world's problems.
All retirees in this area are very welcome.

. Arthur Adamson sends us this message -
Art Anders passed away in a W.Van nursing home Jul.23. A sevice is being
held at Holleyburn Funeral Parlours a 10.00 thurs. Jul.30.
Art joined the airline in 1939 in WG. He flew out of all the bases.
I first met him in 1945 when he was one of seven Captains flying the VR-QL
run on Lockheed Lodestars.
There were some tense moments in those early days on that run, what with
dealing with the terrain and the associated ice & thunderstorms. He spent
a large part of his career in UL flying to Europe etc. A considerable
portion of his service was in Flt\Ops Supervisory work. He will be fondly
remembered by those who knew as a kind,considerate man, friends with all
those he met. <

. Phil Pawsey just a trip in CF-TCC, here are his impressions -
Just had a great trip from YUL to YQM with Alan MacLeod in TCC.
Departed close to ETD with a few minutes delay due to last minute bathroom
visits, time enroute 2:15, TAS 137k at 7500', Avg G/S 172K Via Green 1.
Had an excellent view of the mountain at MLT (have forgotten the name
already) but saw where the walking trail begins (the one that goes all
the way to Atlanta Georgia), many of you have seen this hundreds of
times no doubt. I had the thrill of flying it straight and level (not
too straight and not too level for the first few minutes) for about 45
mins- needed some of your tips Murray. Had forgotten how noisy it was in
the cockpit and certainly appreciated the good headset. It was smooth
during the whole trip but had to ride in ecomony account both 1st.
class seats were taken up by brief cases, maps etc., but every seat in
the back had an aisle and window.

. George Brien has been following the mini-series on PBS about Heathrow LHR,
Just watched Airport part 2- very interesting, especially about the
problems of the female "dispatcher". I can relate with having the same
problems but up to 12 flts an hour, not one. (and dumping a full load
of psgrs off a 767 and their baggage, to be rechecked, when cabin
count/ gate agent count disagreed) during the security concious days of
the early 80's. Pulling the bridge so the crew couldnt get off when
creeping delays might cause a bookoff was another ploy we used <g>

. Diane and Charlie Shnider recently took a walking tour in the UK, here
is their report for us -
We are finally back home and settling in. Our six week trip & hiking
tours of England in April and May were simply great. We did a week in
Cornwall at St. Ives with HF Holidays and a two week walking tour of
London, York and the Yorkshire Moors all arranged by a local Victoria
Tour Operator, Mind the Gap Tours. Both excellent.
Our tip for UK visitors who do not drive is take out a Seniors card,
50 and over, with National Express bus lines that gives one a 30% discount.
ie: Cheltenham to Stoke on Trent return for something like GBP15.00 pp.
One other excellent tip if you travel off season, go into any travel agent
and ask if there are any Shearings Bus Tours at Super-Saver prices.
We were in Nantwich in Cheshire and had to be in St. Ives but we had five
days in between. Requested a tour to the south of England and picked up
a four night, five day tour to The Isle of Wight. Regular price some
GBP189.00 for BGP105.00 per person. This worked out to be full board for
three of the five days at a once great hotel. I asked if they had a bus
going to Plymouth and they moved us onto a Plymouth bus instead of
having to go back north or make our own way west to Cornwall.
The return National Express fare to St. Ives was something like GBP9.00 for
the two of us.
In essence, we were able to get the five day tour for close to the cost of
rail fare, one way, Nantwich to St. Ives.
We will send you more information mentioning some of the better B&Bs on the

MIR SOFTWARE INSTALLED AT NEW HONG KONG AIRPORT?
Not really, although the connection seems obvious after last week's
collision of an unspecified Cathay Pacific airliner with a jetway.
The collision was being blamed on the airport's automated guidance system
which is used to park incoming airliners next to the structures.
Bet they can't wait until 1-1-00.
CESSNA'S CITATIONJET PROTOTYPE BUYS THE SHOULDER...
Somebody's living right -- maybe all three Cessna engineering test
pilots who were aboard the company's original Model 525 CitationJet
prototype, N525CJ. Their Experimental ride suffered a complete loss of
power on both engines July 9 during a test flight from Wichita's Mid-
Continent Airport. The crew successfully landed their newfound glider
in the eastbound lanes of Kansas state route 96, a four-lane highway,
the crew -- was unhurt.
The crew avoided hitting an automobile traveling down K-96, touching down
with the left main and nose gear on the pavement, but with the right main
gear on the dirt shoulder, narrowly missing a drainage ditch. The initial
failure of the motorist to make way for the glidin' Citation, which the
driver apparently didn't see until the last minute, led one wag to suggest
the CJ's option list might be fattened a bit by adding an extra-loud horn.
Investigators from the NTSB, FAA and Cessna quickly converged on the
scene, but it didn't take them long to determine the cause of the flame-
out: fuel exhaustion -- the tanks were dry as a bone. Speculation on
the cause ranges from a miscalibrated non-standard gauging system to
thirstier engines than standard, or both. Cessna quickly dispatched a
pumper truck to wash down the contaminated right engine and a Cessna
fuel truck then refueled the aircraft. After a careful inspection, the
aircraft was permitted to take off from K-96 and fly to Mid-Continent.

For the recent Soccar World Cup series, Air France, being the host nation's
flag carrier, painted some of its aircraft in special colours, 13 Airbus and
3 B747's each had two different countries depicted on their sides.
