. Auldis Day sends us this information -
Concerning the Norberg Chronicles, the April 3, 1961 Edition of the
Montreal Star pictured a slightly bent and dented Vanguard CF-TKG FIN 907.
Capt. E.T. (Ed) Marriott and F.O.Capt. W.E. (Bill) Barnes operated Flt 781
TPA/Yul 2 Apr 1961 together with 5 cabin crew. Of those named-Joan Watson,
Ruth Ringuet and Hilda Neilson - Hilda reported she had a man break open
the bar with an axe and the passengers (41) were served cognac and scotch
during the 3 hrs. the flight circled. I believe this would not have been
during the "frequent steep dives the huge aircraft was put through as the
pilots attempted to shake loose the landing gear" - perhaps before and
after.

Ron Munson brings us up to date -
Thousands of job seekers from all over Britain and Europe descended on the
BA recruitment fair at Olympia where some 20,000 hopefuls queued for hours
to get in.
Another 30,000 people jammed BA switchboards in the hope of landing one of
the 7,000 jobs on offer this year or the 15,000 jobs that will become
available over the next three years.
This year the airline is recruiting 3,400 cabin crew, 2,100 customer
service staff, 1,100 telephone sales personnel and 400 pilots.
The British Airports Authority has applied for planning permission to build
a 252 bedroom budget hotel and a cargo warehouse as part of a
UKP120 million renovation of Hatton Cross, on the southern perimeter of
Heathrow.
BA is to be the official carrier for Scotland's football squad travelling
to the World Cup in France. It will provide an aircraft to take the team
to its Marseilles base on June 5th. For any of you of Scottish blood it
must be said the poor performance of your team, so far, should see them
back north of the border in pretty quick time - England will likely not be
that much later in returning home either.

DENVER FALLS DOWN ON Y2K: THREE-YEAR-OLD FACILITY NOT COMPLIANT
Although it has been billed as an airport for the 21st century, Denver's
new airport is reportedly not even ready for New Year's Day, 2000. The
enduring legacy of former Denver Mayor and former DOT Secretary Federico
Pena includes 40 "mission-critical" computer systems not yet Y2K
compliant, according to the Denver Business Journal.
CRANDALL CALLS IT QUITS...NO FOOLING! The end of another era in U.S.
commercial aviation is at hand: American Airlines Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer Robert Crandall, 62, is retiring after 18 years as
captain of the company. Crandall announced his plans last week,
effective with the carrier's annual meeting on May 20. Donald Carty,
current president at AAL after joining it in 1980, will succeed
Crandall.
WELCOME ABOARD...YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT? The airlines' quest to make
things as simple as possible for their passengers knows few bounds. The
latest manifestation comes courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines, which recently
instituted "drive-through check-in" for its inter-island flights. If
this catches on, AVweb wonders if we'll be able to "super-size" our
carry-on bags.
RUSSIA DEVELOPS SUPER-JUMBO: Russia's Sukhoi design bureau is reportedly
developing a 1,000-seat airliner to compete against super-jumbos on the
drawing boards at Boeing and Airbus. Russia already can lay claim to
the world's largest cargo plane -- the Antonov AN-24 -- but the proposed
KR-860 will be designed to carry between 860 to 1,000 passengers over a
range of 14,000 km.
BOOTED IN BANGOR: It's tough on smokers in the U.S. these days. Perhaps
even more so if the smoker is from out of town. So it was on April 10
when Italian Ignazio Miliano tried to light up in the lavatory of a
Continental Airlines Milan-to-Newark flight. The crew decided to divert
to Bangor, Maine, where Miliano was deplaned and arrested. Miliano
pleaded guilty to an assault charge and received a seven-day sentence in
the local hoosegow, plus a $1,000 fine. The punch line: the Bangor jail
has a no-smoking policy.
