BA WANTS INNOVATIVE FINANCING FOR NEW FLEET
British Airways has requested bids from Airbus and Boeing for an order of
up to 100 narrow body jets, stressing that innovative financing proposals
are expected from both manufacturers.
AIRCRAFT ORDERS
Adria Airways has exercised an option for a 48 seat CL-65-200ER from
Bombardier Aerospace. The option was part of an order for two similar
aircraft and two options the Ljubljana (Slovenia) airline placed in
March 1997.
French regional airline Air Littoral has placed an order with Bombardier
Aerospace for five CL-65-100 aircraft to increase its fleet of the type to
19.
Munich (Germany) based Lufthansa Cargo, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Deutsche Lufthansa, has announced it intends to take up options to buy three
more Boeing MD-11F aircraft boosting its number of aircraft of the type to
eight.

KLM UK this week announced it is reducing cabin staff numbers due to the
abolition of duty-free in 1999. On services within the European Union,
their aircraft are to operate with one less cabin staff member than at
present and the move will cost about 100 jobs.
Three Asian women who worked in AIR CANADA's catering department have won a
claim of racial discrimination at a London Industrial court where it was
heard that the airline unintentionally and indirectly discriminated against
them. The women applied for jobs in A.C.'s aircraft cleaning division after
the sell-off of its catering division. Their case was based on the effect of
a test which was to indirectly discriminate against Asian workers having
limited reading and writing skills in English.
Twenty questions, all devised by quote" airline chiefs in Canada " unquote
were set and these had to be completed within 15 minutes. It was claimed
such tests were unnecessary for the simple task of cleaning an aircraft.
It was said that the questions, in English, were more difficult to complete
within the time for those for whom English was not their first language.
An Air Canada spokesman said quote " the test was necessary to make sure
cleaners were working on the right aircraft and to check that they could read
the labels of a cleaning agent " unquote.
The tribunal was impressed by Air Canada's overall relationship with its
staff, commending its "huge effort" to find employment for workers from its
catering department. The hearing was satisfied the written test was not
designed to prejudice against non-white staff and decided not to award
damages to the women. An appeal is being considered and legal advice is being
sought.
Four other Asian workers who also made racial discrimination claims against
Air Canada lost their cases.
Philippine Airlines has postponed indefinitely orders for six B747-400s and
three airbus jets.
Delta this week became the airline with the most flights across the
Atlantic and now serves 28 European destinations with 57 flights per day.
It was the end of an era this week at Gulf Air with the sale of its last
three L1011 TriStar aircraft which had been in service for more than 20
years.
Japan airlines and American have agreed a major code-sharing deal after
5 years of co-operative effort.
B.A. and Finnair have agreed an alliance and from 29th March will
code-share on Heathrow and Gatwick flights to Helsinki and Stockholm. On
2nd May this will be extended to Finnair flights from Manchester to both
the above capitals.
Employees at Air France will be able to buy up to 15% of shares when the
French government floats 20% of the carrier's capital on the stock market
which will mean that 33% of the airline will be held by employees and other
shareholders.
Lufthansa attracted 5,000 bidders to its first UK ticket auction on the
internet. Knockdown bargains included pairs of e.y. tickets to Hongkong
for UKP205 and YYZ for UKP203. Two business class tickets to Boston were
UKP375 - representing a saving of UKP2,000.
More auctions are planned by the airline later this year.
