Donna Coutts received a Certificate of Appreciation Award at the
AGM this past June for her work as a two time past
Director of the Toronto Pionairs Branch. Donna is
now 1st V.P. of the National Executive of Pionairs.

The Toronto Pionairs last social event was Sept 18th,
a beautiful day to be at the Woodbine Racetrack, where Pionairs
and friends met over a fabulous buffet luncheon, and placed
a few bets on the horses. Those present included
Olie & Mary Moore, Kathy Peck and Kay Argue.
Sue Schreiner, who lives in Etobicoke is interested in getting
together a group of Air Canada Pionairs widows
and single women for coffee meetings and some
interesting outings around the Toronto area.
If anyone in the Toronto District is interested
in helping to organise such a group, Sue would
like to hear from you at (416) 244-2050.
Sue Schreiner's idea above may be worth while other
Districts exploring!
60th Air Canada Birthday Party.
A successful party was held in Bay 6 & 7 Hangars at Pearson
International Airport last Sept 20th. Oldest member could have
been Captain Art Hollingsworth who is 90 years old, and
was taken there, with his wife, by Fraser O'Shaughnessy as
neither Art nor his wife are able to drive now.
Some of the Pionairs who volunteered their time were Donna
Coutts, Loretta Blencoe and son, Lloyd and Janet Dean,
Elaine Murdock, Patricia Elliot, Fraser and Rosemary
O'Shaughnessy. Highlights were the two fashion shows in which
several Pionairs paraded in TCA and Air Canada uniforms from
the 40's and 50's right up to the 80's, with active employees
showing off the 90's. The Air Canada/TCA memorabilia displays
handled by Fraser and Joan Muir provided lots of interest.
Several coffee meetings have been held since the summer for
all Oakville/Burlington and vicinity Pionairs. These were at
the PIG & WHISTLE restaurant at Burlock Drive & Lakeshore Rd.
About 30 Pionairs have been turning up for the coffee breaks,
held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month starting at 11.30am.
Spouses and friends of Pionairs are most welcome to stay for

While the Christmas luncheon this year is in Mississauga, the
Toronto District would like to have next years in the

MEXICANA, SIA, AIR NEW ZEALAND MAY BE NEXT "STAR"
Air New Zealand, Mexicana and Singapore Airlines could become
the new members of the Star Alliance in early 1998. The three
airlines are currently following the pattern for joining the
alliance by developing bilateral agreement with current alliance
members.
Speaking in Montreal, Air Canada spokeswoman Priscille LeBlanc
confirmed the airline was also negotiating a bilateral agreement
with Mexicana, even though Air Canada has no right to serve Mexico,
either with its own flights or through code share agreements,
because Canadian Airlines is Canada's designated carrier to Mexico.
With the addition of these three new carriers, the Star Alliance
would have by far the broadest reach of any airlines alliance,
missing only a partner in Africa to offer a truly global network,
but rumours about talks between South African Airways and
Lufthansa and United Airlines have been circulating for months now.
HEATHROW TO REMAIN CONGESTED FOR TIME TO COME
Delays and congestions at London Heathrow airport are likely to
be the norm well into the new millennium, according to operator
British Airport Authority (BAA). BAA said faster than expected
growth in passenger numbers and regulatory delays to building a
new terminal will make the airport more crowded than it already
is and will increase bottlenecks at security check points.
Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer has decided to change the
name of its 50 passenger regional jet aircraft, the EMB-145, to
the ERJ145 because it failed to show up on computer reservation
systems as a jet while competitors' aircraft, Canadair's RJ and
AI(R)'s Avro, do.
AIRCRAFT ORDERS
Eva Airways (BR), Taiwan's second largest airline, has signed a
letter of intent with Airbus Industrie for the purchase of six
A340-500s and A340-600s and options for six more.
Taiwan's Far Eastern Air Transport (EF) has announced it placed
an order with Boeing for five 757s and three McDonnell MD-83s,
along with a further five options for the 757.
US regional carrier Mesa Airlines (YV) has exercised options to
purchase 16 Canadair Regional Jets 200LR from Bombardier Regional
Aircraft, bringing the airline's total order to 32. Little known
Mesa is the world's largest regional airline, flying to 168 cities
across the USA with a fleet of 186 aircraft.
