BOEING DROPS MD-80, MD-90, KEEPS MD-11
Boeing has announced it is phasing out production of the MD-80 and
MD-90 aircraft which it acquired as part of its merger with
McDonnell in July of this year.
The US aircraft manufacturer will maintain production of
McDonnell's long haul trijet aircraft, the MD-11, but expects
demand to come mainly from cargo operators. Boeing will also
fulfill a commitment to produce 50 narrowbody MD-95s while
withholding a final decision on the model.
BOEING STUDIES COMPETITOR TO A340-600
Boeing is to start talks with airlines about developing an ultra
long range version of its 747 aircraft to compete with Airbus'
A340-600. The new aircraft, dubbed the 747-200X would seat 355 to
380 passengers for flights up to 14,800 Km (9,250 miles), ahead
of its European rival's A340-600 and its 13,900 Km (8690 miles)
range. The derivative is being offered as an alternative to the
planned Boeing 777-200X which is facing growing competition from
the A340-600.
US AIRWAYS CONFIRMS AIRBUS ORDER...
US Airways has confirmed its order for 124 A320 family Airbus
Industrie aircraft and an additional 276 options after its pilots
voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new five year labour contract
following negotiations between the airline and its pilot union.
UNITED TO TEST ONE-BAG LIMIT FOR BARGAIN FLYERS
In a move sure to be closely watched by other airlines, US carrier
United Airlines has decided to get tough on bargain flyers out of
Des Moines, Iowa (USA) in a test it hopes to expand to its entire
network.
Starting December 1, passengers paying the lowest fare out of Des
Moines will be limited to only one carry-on bag instead of the
customary two, in addition to being forced to use electronic
paperless ticketing and to buy their ticket immediately at the
time of reservation.
AIRCRAFT ORDERS
Irish carrier Aer Lingus (EI) has ordered two Airbus Industrie
A321s from the European manufacturer. First delivery is expected
in 1998.
SilkAir (MI), the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, has signed
a contract with Airbus Industrie covering the firm order of three
124-seat A319s and five 150-seat A320 aircraft, with options for a
further 10 aircraft of any type from the family. Powered by
International Aero Engines' V2500, the aircraft will be delivered
starting in September 1998.
STAR ALLIANCE.
The Star Alliance is unlikely to admit any new member until well
into 1998, according to Lufthansa CEO Frederick Reid. Mr. Reid's
announcement dampens rumours that Cathay Pacific or Singapore
Airlines, or both, were to join the alliance before the end of
1997.

. SMILIE.
Lawson Tremellen found this for us -
As our plane touched down on the runway, its landing gear caught
fire.
Because the fire was near the engines, we exited the aircraft
using emergency protocol. I found myself in a group of stunned
passengers, huddled on the pavement, wondering about the fate of
our luggage. A man standing next to me was staring wide-eyed,
watching the firemen who were extinguishing the flames.
"Wow," he said, "this is the first time this has happened to me!"
"I know what you mean," I commented. "I fly all the time in my
line of work."
"So do I," he replied. I asked him what he did.
He grinned sheepishly and said, "I'm the pilot."
Cheers Lawson Tremellen
