Bill Norberg sends us the following -
I was privileged to start working for Trans Canada Airlines in 1940
and worked 43 years before my retirement. I have been associated in
one way or another for 57 of its 60 years.
This is truly a marvellous airline and its developement is truly an
oustanding accomplishment by a fine group of people.
There have been several books written about TCA/AC but none I have
read seem to have come even close to telling the real stories about
how it all actually came about.
I have tried on several occasions to create interest in a project to
document these wonderful stories before all those who were a part of
it all are dead and buried. All agree it would be a good idea but
few if any appear prepared to put pen to paper.
I have documented my own work experiences comprising some 4-500
pages so far and found the process to be fascinating and above
all, enjoyable.
I have also started to create a document structure upon which the
stories and experiences of individuals could be added. I would
appreciate any comments or suggestions about such a project.
The time is getting shorter and each year we lose more of the
people who made it all happen and who could add much to such a
document.

. Miscellaneous Ramblings.
Contributed David Livingstone who was on Vancouver Island
recently (Flight deck out, Rockies solid overcast, wide body
middle seat back, Rockies clear!)
and spent a very pleasant two days in the Comox/Courtenay area,
home to a large number of Pionairs. While staying with Murray and
Ione Phipps, they invited Steve and Yvette Clark and Frank and
Fran Stevens for dinner. The Old Home Week talk stretched far into
the night and a lot of TCA/Air Canada names were tossed about.
Murray, Frank , and Steve send their regards to all who knew them.
And that's what the Pionairs is all about.
We all worked together for uncounted, mostly good years. Lets
relive some of the past at Sussex on the 23rd. See you there !

. NEWS FROM THE DISTRICTS -
From the MONTREAL Pionairs Newsletter 'Sentinel'
The St. Norbert, Manitoba Project By Pam Rosholt
The Winnipeg Flood brought much suffering as we all know but there
were many stories about people working together to make things
easier.
We all felt proud when we learned that our Pionairs had travelled
to St. Norbert to assist employees and volunteers in restoring the
Taras Shevchenko Community Hall in August 1997. The Hall is an
important centre for community and social activities. It will
provide housing this winter to people who have been left homeless
by the Winnipeg flood disaster. From what we read and saw on
television, the community centre members felt helpless when they
learned the flood had rendered their centre useless.
Then, almost like a miracle, Air Canada came and did whatever was
needed to put the community centre in top shape again.
There was no end to the kind of talents needed to achieve the task
and the work ranged from carpentry, cosntruction, upholstery and
painting. This is just another example to show that when we
retire, we tend to share the things we learned in our working lives.
. TRIP TO PARIS
Michel Bériau, our Assistant-Director, is planning an organized
Tour to Paris for the month of October, 1998.
Since his retirement, Michel has developed several Tours to Paris
and other places, which he does as a hobby.
As you are aware, these tours take time to organize. Before he
even starts, Michel needs to know if a) there is an interest
amongst our members, b) the number of people interested and
c) if they would be prepared to make a $200.00 down payment 6-8
weeks in advance.
These tours require that we reserve travel space as well as
accommodation long in advance. As well, they require that we make
a deposit several weeks in advance.
This being said, we are asking you to-day advise Michel if there
is any chance that you might take this tour. Keep in mind that
the number of people will be limited so we are asking you to
advise Michel no later than November 30,1997.

BOEING: ON A ROLL?
They must be loving life in Seattle. While the world's
largest manufacturer of civilian airliners is going through
some growing pains, the problems Boeing has are not the kind
that other airframe makers are used to.
Among them, Boeing's Commercial Airplane Group said last week
it will be forced to delay delivery of 12 jets -- seven 737s,
four 747s and one 757 -- from the third quarter of 1997 to
the fourth due to parts shortages and problems with
subcontractors brought about by the continued push for
increased production rates, as well as the need to more fully
integrate and train new employees hired or brought aboard
recently. Regardless, the big B still plans to have
delivered between 340 and 350 aircraft during 1997. That's a
lot of recycled beer cans.
BOEING, BOEING -- TURBULENCE TAKES TOLL:
Now comes this timely reminder to keep your seat belt buckled
when seated aboard an airliner. Last Sunday, a United 747
with 301 pax and a crew of 18 launched from Chicago's O'Hare
for Tokyo but landed at Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. an hour
later after one passenger's head struck an overhead storage
bin and a flight attendant injured her knee as a result of an
encounter with turbulence. Two other pax were also injured.

. Interline stuff.
Good news for cons! For this winter, Air Canada is planning to
double the number of destinations in Eurpoe, add 25% more seats a
week- thats 42,000 - to the US and use the A340 on routes to
New Delhi, Hong Kong, Seoul and Osaka.
~-=o0o=-~
. That's it for this time, please we need your input, send
comments and email addresses of any others who may be
interested to Vesta with a copy to Terry.
