Dear Vesta and Terry,
I was delighted to receive the information about the "Between
Ourselves Netletter" in the recent Pionairs Bulletin. What a
wonderful way to keep the TCA/AC family in touch.
When one considers the role our industry played in the development
of communications systems it is fitting that we should use the
Internet to keep in touch with those who made it all happen.
Congratulations on bringing this idea to fruition! I see great
potential for this process.
I spent 43 years with Trans Canada Airlines/Air Canada before my
retirement in 1983.I have been associated in one way or another with
57 years of the Airline's 60 wonderful years and in many areas of
the corporation.
It is my opinion the book has yet to be written about how it all
came about.I have wanted and even tried to get such a book underway
but with no success as yet. I have written about 5-600 pages about
my own airline experiences and enjoyed every minute of the task.I
see similar satisfaction for others if they were to try the same.

Subject: Air Canada 60th or 30th
Flight AC799 (scheduled arrival 1400) September 29 operated with
the A-319 aircraft painted in the old TCA colors. Immediately after
flight arrival, there was a short formal ceremony at the Gate with
local Air Canada Management, a delegate from the Canadian Consulate
and City/Department of Airports Officials. The Gate Area was
decorated and a kilted bagpiper performed. Following the short
ceremony, refreshments and anniversary cake were served in our Maple
Leaf Lounge. The celebration concluded with the departure of the
special A-319 aircraft as flight AC79 at 15:30.
All active as well as retired LAX employees were cordially invited
to attend.
PLEASE NOTE: This has all been noted as the 30th anniversary of Air
Canada operation into Los Angeles and nothing really said about the
60th Birthday. More to follow in a later issue.

Subject: Retirees' Handbook of Reduced Rate Travel

At the June Pionairs' Annual General Meeting, the Vice President,
Human Resources Paul Garratt and his management team participated in
a round- table discussion with many delegates, on various Human
Resources topics. Most discussions concerned Reduced Rate
Transportation. It became clear that many (perhaps most) retirees do
not have a comprehensive grasp of the increasingly-complex Reduced
Rate options. And most don't have easy access to the range of
detailed information they need to effectively use those options.
Several present proposed that the Company and Pionairs produce a
Handbook where most of us could easily find the answers. Mr. Garratt
and Ms. Irene Vazalinskas (the Manager, Industry Travel) warmly
responded to the proposal.
Incoming President Olie Moore and team leader Bob Robbins assembled
a team consisting of Ron Vigars, Stephanie Mandzie, Al Croome, and
Don Demeza to start work on this. In September Ms. Vazalinskas met
with Messrs. Moore, Robbins and Demeza to discuss how we should
tackle the job. We agreed on the following:
* Our over-all goal is to produce a Handbook that will enable
most of its users to EFFECTIVELY ......
a) identify the reduced rate travel options for which they are
eligible.
b) select the options they will use as they plan their travel.
c) make arrangements (registrations or reservations) to travel.
d) do their travelling.
e) handle any aftermath of travelling (e.g. reconcile deductions
from pension cheques; etc.)
* We will use formats and language that will easily be
understood by persons who have little or no experience in using
reduced rate transportation.
* As we develop material we will always check it out with Irene
Vazalinskas before publishing it.
* Our first job is to produce and regularly update a reference
Handbook. This means we will not get into trying to correct
situations that would still exist even if the world's best-compiled
handbook was available to everyone. e.g. We won't try to influence
who gets what privileges and who doesn't ; etc.; etc.; etc.
We have a lot to learn as we tackle this job. So we'll welcome

Inn.
Social time 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and the buffet 12:15 p.m. to

Guest speaker will be Alex Mair, a well known local writer and
broadcaster with an extensive public speaking career. The cost is
$11.50 per person. If anyone from outside the station wishes to
