The Vancouver Island Up Island Summer Luncheon was held on
Thursday the 28th August, with a gathering of 60 Pionairs.
Representation was spread out - 7 from Victoria, 9 from
Saanich, 3 from Saltspring Island, 4 from Vancouver,
2 from Ontario and 2 from London, England. Everyone enjoyed
a good spread, and the guest speaker was Al Thompson, CEO of
AirBC. During his talk, Al Thompson mentioned that the
appearance of the TCA Lockheed 10A and an Air Canada Airbus
A340 at the Abbotsford Airshow, depicting one of the earliest
and one of the latest aircraft to be operated by Air Canada
(nee Trans-Canada Air Lines) symbolizing the past 60 years,
was well received. Also we were told that the latest Airbus A319
has been painted in the original scheme of Trans-Canada Air Lines,
and will be officially unveiled during the Vancouver 60th
anniversary celebrations.
It took much research to get the correct colouring for the TCA
insignia, due to the lack of colour photos available. To
complete the job, 156 gallons of paint were used, 80 gallons
of silver, 60 gallons of clear and 16 gallons of black & white.
It was explained that the silver was used as present day
airframes are treated with a green undercoat off the assembly
line - not the bare metal as were the earlier aircraft 60 years
ago.
This years 'Dreams Take Flight' will depart Vancouver on October
28th (exact departure time to be determined).

PAX BEWARE: BOARD WANTS PFC FOR LAX AND ONT:
Los Angeles airport commissioners want to cut airline landing fees
and transfer the cost to passengers by means of a new $3 Passenger
Facilities Charge. The money would fund noise mitigation costs at
two airports, Los Angeles and Ontario, California.
