On September 1st 1937, Trans-Canada Air Lines flew their first
revenue flight from Vancouver to Seattle. Load factor not the
best - only two Pax (could they have been cons? - eds)!

. Welcome to Alex Douglas who joined TCA in Winnipeg 1946 and went to
Edmonton , from there to Winnipeg in 1949, transfer
to Toronto 1954, on to Chicago 1955 where I retired in
1984. My last position was Personnel & Administration
Manager. I moved in 1989 to Menifee, CA. which is in
Riverside County, we are 70 miles north of San Diego
and 500 miles west of Palm Springs. We are 3 miles south
of Sun City where two other Air Canada Pionairs live.

KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH OUR 'GOLDEN' FRIENDS.
On Aug 21 I had the pleasure of a reunion with Norma Arsneault/
McNamara, Moira Taylor/Solis, Jan Mead/Forrester and Hal at their
home in Parksville, B.C. Norma, Moira, Jan and I were Teletype
operators at ULX Transat Dorval in 1953 plus, working with George
Briggs, supervisor, Lorna Howie/Grosman, Anita Hall, Margaret
McLeod, recently deceased, Gladys Morris, Lorna MacKenzie, Rosa
McEachern, Sylvia and Vickie Highway, Carmen Francoeur, Gisele
Marchand<?> Madeleine Fallon, Lena Bourque, Kay Pitt, Pat
Noseworthy, Nell Farmer to name a few.
Norma, Moria and I hadn't seen each other for 40 years and we
hadn't changed a bit <G>.
Hal Forrester retired, former manager Maintenance Publications
and it's their son, Bill Forrester who won an excellence award
recently. (see Horizons). Hello Bill Sim.

Recently, I did some research on a Major A.D. Carter in Shoreham
U.K.
There is a wonderful little airport there that has a museum
dedicated to the World War 1 flyers. It is where the Canadian
Air Force began and where it disbanded when the politicians showed
no interest.
The men who volunteer there have done a marvelous job of gathering
information, pictures, etc. and displaying them in a tiny area of
the airport. Their enthusiasm is infectious. They have such
respect for Canadians there and for what the young men did to
start the Air Force that I feel the Canadian Government or some of
the military would be interested in giving them some recognition
for their efforts to keep the records and keep the spirit alive.
Just wondering if there are any TCA/Air Canada personnel or
ex-Air Force who would like to take up this particular torch?
Shoreham is a wonderful little village nestled around the 1930's
art deco style building that still houses the tower and airport
facilities including the pub which was bustling with locals and
young helicopter pilots. I had a wonderful day there. Jack was
not too well during the trip, so missed a lot of the interesting
tours they gave me, but he has encouraged me to follow up and I
thought somebody on line might be curious too. Major Carter was
credited with 31 German planes shot down in 4 months in 19l8.
It is a very interesting story and I am hoping that someone will
show some interest in recognizing a true Canadian hero.
Perhaps there are others who believe, as I do, that now would be
a good time to learn more about them. We have had our fill of the
Somalia type of military bozos. In any case, I think Jack would
appreciate hearing from some of the old timers. He has been
retired since 1975, so there must be a few who remember him.
He has been frustrated by the effects of a stroke a year and a
half ago and is no longer able to play golf or do the woodworking
he enjoyed. Misses men's company and especially those who knew
the airline in "the old days". . .

abolished in Oct 1998.
