CIC Daily makes mention of the arrangement in place for an Air Canada employee, who wish to donate to the Winnipeg Flood fund, to send their cheque to the Salvation Army/Air Canada or Red Cross/Air Canada. Gord Hykle sends us this information - from a magazine dated 1946 - ' That great military secret, LORAN, is a long-range radio navigational system based on radar-pulse technique, and is being used for the first time by any commercial airline in the world by Trans-Canada Air Lines on the North Atlantic service which the company operates for the Dominion Government using Lancaster aircraft (CGTAS). Experience in its own use was obtained by the airline from the R.C.A.F. LORAN is the only devise of all long-range navigational aids to aviation which can always be depended upon to give true indications. With it accurate fixes are generally obtainable well over 800 miles from the transmitting stations in day-time and over 1,400 miles at night. Without the use of compass, chronometer, radio or radar, fixes can be obtained in less than a minute, and no calculation is necessary. By this system the time travel of radio waves from two ground stations to the aircraft is measured, and from this the distance can be obtained.' ~-=o0o=-~ . Remember those Vickers Vanguards? When the Hunting Cargo Airlines' Merchantman G-APEP landed at Weybridge, Surrey, UK on Oct 17 last year, it had completed the last flight by the type - almost 38 years after the Vanguard prototype's maiden flight from the same airfield on Jan 20th 1959. Unfortunately the introduction of this new turboprop type came at a time when turbojets were entering service, ending any chance the manufacturer had of world-wide sales. Only 45 were produced, the first two c/n 701 & 702 were used as static test airframes at Weybridge. 20 were purchased by British European Airways, and 23 by our own airline, then Trans-Canada Air Lines. Phasing out by TCA was started in 1969, aircraft being taken in part payment for Lockheed TriStars by Air Holdings of UK. They were ferried to Stanstead, Southend, UK or Cambridge, where they became part of the scenery in open storage awaiting new homes. The following went in 1969 - CF-TKB, TKD, TKG, TKJ, TKN and TKV. CF-TKA (901) was broken up at Dorval during Aug 1973. CF-TKB (902) had a varied career, Air Holdings reg was G-AYFN, then as TF-JES with Thor Air Cargo in 1971, then SE-FTK with Air Trader in 1972, as G-AYFN with Invicta International Airlines in 1973, finally on to Europe Aero Service as F-BXAJ where it was withdrawn from service at Perpignan on July 17, 1979 and later broken up. CF-TKC (903) went to Europe Aero Service in 1972, reg as F-BTOX and withdrawn from service at Perpignan May 6, 1975 and broken up. CF-TKD (904) reg as G-AXOY, then TF-AVA for Air Viking in 1970, as TF-JEJ with Thor Air Cargo in 1971, to Invicta International Airlines later in 1971, then as F-BXOH with Europe Aero Service in Perpignan on Nov 5, 1975 for spares use and later broken up. A question for "real" aviators -- In the movie Turbulence, there is a scene where, in a Level 6 thunderstorm, a 747-200 rolls completely over into inverted flight and stays there for a couple of minutes while on autopilot. Smilies - Then there was the XXX Captain, who was on the flight into the old Kansas City Downtown airport. If you have never been in there, there was a levee right at the end of the runway. This poor fellow was just a tad low on his approach and wiped the landing gear off on the top of the levee. Needless to say, the landing then was quite short and they had considerable difficulty taxiing to the gate! The reporters were interviewing the Flight Attendant, after the crash. Asked what she thought of the landing, she replied, after a moments thought, "Actually, it was one of his BETTER landings!" Said by an old pilot: "It's better to be down here wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here!" ~-=o0o=-~ .
