News from the Districts - Our last social in 1996 was an enjoyable Christmas Luncheon at the Bristol Place Hotel. 135 joined together to have a great time in renewing old friendships and meeting new people. The Pionairs were very generous with their contributions to the food bank as approximately 250 to 300 pounds of food was donated to a worthy cause. In addition $500.00 was donated to the Toronto Child's Dreams Take Flight, as a result of our raffle. On behalf of the food bank and Dreams Take Flight many thanks to all of you. Our Guest speaker, Kathy Dutchak, Chairperson for Dreams Take Flight, assisted by Mary Wolfe, gave us an insight into the work that goes on to launch a flight for handicapped children. Kathy and Mary also showed us the new logo and informed us about the Dreams Take Flight plans for 1997. Kathy and Mary asked for Pionairs Volunteers to help them in their Dreams Take Flight program. We were also very pleased to have Fraser Muir, the president of Pionairs and his wife Joan join us at our Christmas get-together. Fraser spoke to the gathering about the upcoming AGM, providing a background as to why it was moved to Montreal for June 1 to 4,1997 from St. Charles Ill. Stan Molstad, Director. Gord Hykle send us some of his memories of radar the "Magic Eye" at Winnipeg.- For those of you who have copies of the old "Between Ourselves" magazine, there were two articles in September and November of 1945 describing the operation and thoughts on how this "magic eye" would affect aviation in the future. Later, in 1946, as part of a write-up on TCA, the Canadian National Geographic magazine gave further details. This latter article used one of many photos I had taken during the project. There is an interesting story to go with that photo and I will tell it in a later Netletter - Between Ourselves. Under management of the old Communications Department staff at the site at the north end of the field consisted of four operators and two technicians. The techs were Art Warner and Walt Cole. The four operators were Gord McKen, Len MacMillan, Harvey Lesage and myself. We worked two shifts and had a long walk from the old parking lot near Ellice Ave. to Saskatchewan Ave. The antenna dish, which looked like a huge bull-dozer blade, was elevated at our site to be able to observe aircraft. - More next time ~-=o0o=-~ Attention all Golfers. (Nothing like this for those Air Canada Connector pilots has been noticed - eds) It's just not right.
