Tom Anderson, who recently had his email added to our growing list, sends us this his history - 'I joined Air Canada in 1973 in the Finance department in Montreal (PVM days) and retired in 1992. I spent the first 7 years working in the Finance department and then switched over to Technical Operations at Dorval. Most of the time there was spent in Supply and Stores providing all the spare parts and supplies to run the airline. When I retired we moved to just outside Ottawa (Carp), and a week ago moved to Dunrobin which is just north of Kanata (a suburb of Ottawa). We are enjoying it very much here in Ottawa and have recently been attending some of the local Pionair events'. Air Canada history - The first aircraft operated by Trans-Canada Air Lines was (3) Stearman bi-planes. Used mostly for pilot training and route surveys. in 1937/8. (1) Stearman was sold to Northern Airways in March 1938. The inauguration of the TCA first commercial flights was with a fleet of (5) Lockheed L10A Electra over the 122 mile route between Vancouver and Seattle in September 1937. The L10A, with a range of 713 statute miles at 190 mph, carried 10 passengers. The Lockheed L14H2 was an improved version of the L10A and the company replaced the L10A with 16 of the L14H2 in May 1938. Later in 1942, 12 of the L14H2 were modified to L1408 for a range of 1660 statute miles at 220 mph and 10 passengers. The Lockheed Lodestar 1808A was introduced in 1941 and carried 14 passengers over 2000 statue miles at 244 mph. Trans-Canada Air Lines 1st trans-Atlantic flights started in 1943 during WWII with (9) Lancastrian bombers modified to carry 9,000 lbs of mail, cargo and 10 priority passengers. Cruising at 250 mph with a range of 3050 statute miles. In 1947, the Lancastrians were replaced with (23) Northstar DC4M2, the 1st pressurized 4 engined aircraft to go into service with TCA and carrying 40 passengers range 3,860 statute miles at 230 mph. London's England Heathrow Airport has a central bus and underground rail station reached via subways linking terminals 1, 2 & 3 complete with a travel centre or directory board. The coach station is adjacent to the Arrivals Terminal 3 and operates services to Gatwick, Stansted, Woking, Reading and the Airbus service to downtown London. A courtesy bus service provides links between all terminals. Underground (Piccadilly line) trains run every 5-9 minutes with an average time of 47-60 minutes to downtown London. First train departs at 05:08 and last train departs 23:47. Tom Anderson sends us the following information - 'I just purchased a computer a year ago and find it really fun. We signed up with an internet provider last May and used the net to find accommodation in Paris and in Spain, where we spent 3 weeks in October. It turned out the reservations we made through the internet were fine and in fact for the villa we rented in Spain the booking agent was in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Most of the time in Spain was spent in Andalucia, Seville, Granada, Malaga etc with one week at a villa on the Costa del Sol at Nerja. We didn't have any problems getting accommodation, but I suppose it was the time of year October/November. The weather in Spain was terrific, only one day with some rain and the temperature 18 - 26 Celsius.
