Tom Martin sends us the following piece of information from the June 14, 1996 issue of the Icelandic Weekly, published in YWG. Icelandair has started twice weekly 757 flights from Halifax to Keflavik. The inaugural flight May 21 included a number of Canadians of Icelandic heritage from the Winnipeg and Gimli areas. The article pointed out that Icelandic links with Canada go back 1000 years since the settlement at Lanse aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland. ~-=o0o=-~ . From an article in the Globe and Mail recently - Canada Customs' best kept secrets - the basket rate. This special duty rate is a low tariff designed to speed the processing of travellers. Instead of applying individual duties on each item, Customs levies a flat fee on up to C$300 worth of goods over and above the personal exemption limits. The rate can be used by anyone who has been out of Canada for at least 48 hours. The lowest basket rate on purchases made in Mexico is .06% plus 7% GST or 7.6%. The USA purchase basket rate is 1.4% plus 7% GST. For all other countries the rate is 7.1% plus 7% GST. The basket rate does not allow for additional alcohol or tobacco. Crossing the borders of New Brunswick, Manitoba or Quebec you will have to pay sales tax as well. ~-=o0o=-~ . Next, its time for uncle "Toby" to come along, followed by "Billy Tee". They leave and "Arthur Ritis " shows up and stays with me for the rest of the day. He doesn"t like to stay in one place very long so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a day, I"m really tired and glad to go to bed with Johnny Walker. What a life! What a life!
