INTERLINE PRIVILEGES WHAT THEY ARE Some years ago, the cruise lines began quietly offering special rates to airline personnel. These rates were originally made available on specific sailings which, for one reason or another, were not adequately booked. More recently, as cruise industry capacities steadily increased, interline rates have become a standard offering by most major lines in an attempt to "top off" their sailings. Interline sales are attractive to cruise lines because the passengers do not require air transportation to and from the ship (they use their pass privileges), and discount levels are confined to qualified people within the travel industry, thereby helping cruise lines to maintain their profit margins. Were it not for interline travellers, the lines would have to resort to even deeper discounts at the retail level. WHO QUALIFIES While there are some minor variations in rules governing interline bookings, the general rule is that to qualify for interline privileges, you must be an active employee or retiree of a passenger/cargo airline which is a member of the IATA or ARC organization. Your parents, spouse and any dependent children are also entitled to the same consideration. Each cabin booked must include at least one qualified interliner. This means, for example, that if you wish to share your cabin with a friend, that friend will enjoy the benefits of your interline rates. HOW RULES ARE ENFORCED Interline rates are made available only through specially authorized interline agencies. They are not available through retail travel agencies. Interline bookings are only accepted from qualified passengers. At the time your booking is processed, your airline picture ID or a letter from your employer confirming your current status with them could be required. When you arrive at the port of embarkation, the cruise line may ask you to confirm your status prior to boarding, so you should make sure you take adequate documentation with you.
