In the beginning around 1977 George Heron of Sidney BC call sign VE7HK and Ralph Thomas, of Ottawa, VE3GG started contacting one another on a weekly basis. They where soon joined by Bill Keyes of Winnipeg VE4NF and Al Lunan, VE2WL of Montreal and myself VE7WW of Sidney BC. We Maintained this Tuesday schedule for several years and slowly others started to join in like Vern Bowers, VE1-- I forgot his call, of Nova Scotia, Chuck Palmer VE3AZA of the Toronto area and others too numerous to mention here. Sometime during the 1980s we advertised in "Between Ourselves" for Hams within the company, employed or retired to submit their names and call signs, to make up a Roster of all Hams within the Company. I believe it was Ralph Thomas who made up and printed the first list and mailed out copies to those who where interested. Over the years the job of editing and revising the List fell to Gordon Hykle, of Montreal VE2QX and he has done an excellent job of doing this very important chore. He is ably assisted by Phil Pawsey, of St Phillippe D,Argenteuil, Quebec, VE2DTM who had taken on the task of distributing and mailing out this list. The List is updated at least once a year to keep it current and sadly deletions due to the passing of some of our members whom we refer to as "Silent Keys", also adding newcomers to the List. At present there are 231 names on the List. Of course not all check into the various Nets but when conditions are reasonably good on 20 meters, we get an average of 25 to 30 check-ins every Tuesday. For any ones information who might want to listen in on this particular Net, we use a frequency of 14.133Mhz starting at 1700 GMT in the Summer and 1800 GMT in the Winter. There are also several other Nets within the Ham Community, one being the TCA/AC BC Net, usually hosted by Ozzie Candy of Richmond BC VE7KX, and they operate on Sundays and Tuesdays mornings at 0900 am Local time on a frequency of 3.735KHZ. In Eastern Canada, mostly Ontario and Quebec, there are some who keep in touch with mebets in the USA and they use 14173 early in the morning their time and later in the day 14163, which is much a better time for us here on the West coast. When conditions are good (especially when the SunSpot numbers are up, they are at their lowest ebb right now) we get check ins from as far away as England and of course right across every province in Canada. We also hear occasionally from Pilots, from their aircaft while enroute to different destinations around the world. We usally receive weather reports from the different parts of the countrty, and receive information re Pionairs Meetings etc. and also other items of interest. We have our "Health and Welfare" with which we keep in touch with those who have health problems, and receive reports on the "Silent Keys". At other times we go back to early days and bring back old memories and incidents from the past. Unfortunately not too many Hams on our List are on E-Mail so we extract portions of the Newsletters and Netletters and give it to them over the air, to those who are interested. We would certainly encourage anybody to get their Amateur License and join us, however you can become an SWL (Short Wave Listener) and tune into our Nets.
