You need JavaScript enabled to view it. thought the following may be of interest - The following is a condensation taken out of the April edition of the Royal Canadian Legion magazine. It is titled "FOWL PLAY" On Nov.21,1942 I was reaching the end of an eight week course designed to turn me and 35 other young men into pilots. We were stationed at No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School in Windsor Ont., and our goal was to graduate and move on to a RCAF service flying training school. At the time each of us had amassed approximately 65-70 hours of flying time. We were proud of ourselves, and, I suspect not nearly as good as we thought we were. All I needed was a cross-country and an instrument test, and I would be out of there. But, Nov. 21 dawned stormy, with a low ceiling and poor visibility. Solo flying was washed out but dual flying with an instructor in charge was authorized. I was authorized to go with an instructor on a triangular run from Windsor to Leamington to Amherstburg, and back, a distance of 65 miles. My instructor was sick of these cross country and suggested we do a little low flying and enjoy ourselves. Never one to throw cold water on a little fun, I was a willing accomplice to this plan. As soon as we were away from the airport we set course for the Detroit River and started to buzz whatever boat traffic we could find. After shooting up the odd boat, we spotted some ducks and started to chase them while flying inches above the water. While flying abreast of River Canard we spotted a group of birds on the water. We flew over the birds but instead of flying off in panic as the others had done, the birds just sat there. Pulling up to about 30 feet, I mentioned to my instructor that we had hit something with our tail wheel and he thought it was an engine misfire. We decided to go back and take a look around. That was our second mistake. As we came around approximately 10 feet off the deck and crossed over the decoys-I saw three hunters standing in what remained a duck blind. All three hunters had double barrelled shotguns. Then I saw flames coming from the barrels of each gun and felt red-hot needles hit my hand,leg, and most embarrassing ,my derriere. We took off like a scared rabbit and climbed to a decent altitude. My instructor had blood running down his face. The aircraft was running well, but it had several holes in it. I should have mentioned the aircraft was a Tiger Moth. It goes on and on but to make a long interesting story short, they went back to base and stuck to the story that the weather made them to abandon the cross country and forced them down low to find out where they were and accidentally flew over the hunters. They gave a fictitious position and when the investigation team went to this position, they found some empty shell cases and the investigation was closed.
