NetLetter Archives

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2719 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends.

Air Canada announced that it will introduce new non-stop services in the second and third quarters between the following cities: Toronto-Salt Lake City, Toronto-Shanghai, Montreal-Denver, Montreal-Mexico City, Edmonton-Yellowknife, Edmonton-Victoria, Edmonton-Kelowna, Calgary- Yellowknife, Calgary-Comox and Winnipeg- London (Ontario).

"All-economy" flights scheduled to operate this summer. Some of our supplementary flights operated during peak summer months on year-round international routes will be flown using North America- configured B767-200s and B767-300s. Supplementary flights offering all-Economy service on the following routes will complement our year-round flights featuring a choice of Executive First and Economy service: Toronto-London Heathrow; Toronto-Paris, Montreal-Paris; Vancouver-Osaka; and Vancouver- Seoul. Separately, we will provide our new Premium Economy service, offering customers an enhanced economy product in the front cabin, on three summer-only seasonal routes effective mid-June: Toronto-Amsterdam, Toronto-Manchester and Toronto-Dublin/Shannon. Our year-round Toronto- Rome service will offer Executive First during the peak summer months and Premium Economy the rest of the year.

Edmonton - YXD Special event on July 9, 2006 - Be here to witness the recreation of the first 'airmail flight' between Calgary and Edmonton. We will also feature the roll-out the "Stinson Special" on this date.

Hi everybody - The rollout of the Curtiss Special replica will be at 1400 hrs Sunday, July 9th, 2006 at the City Centre Airport in downtown Edmonton - the airport is YXD. This is where the Alberta Aviation Museum is located. The street address is:

Just prior to the rollout a Cessna 172 will arrive from Calgary with airmail, replicating Katherine Stinson's flight of July 9th, 1918. The pilot, Audrey Kahovec, dressed in helmet, goggles, and long leather coat, will then park the Cessna and get into the Curtiss Special for the rollout.
There is no charge for this event and the Alberta Aviation Museum will open its doors to free admission (donations would be appreciated). There is free parking in front of and nearby the Aviation Museum. No arrangements have been made for fly-ins but YXD has ample facilities for visiting aircraft.

The PWA B-737 that Air Canada graciously donated to the Museum will be on display and open to the public as will a retired RCAF DC-3 that took part in D-Day and is still in its 1950's RCAF configuration inside and out.

Sabena Technics hangar at Brussels Airport was destroyed May 5th., by a heavy fire that damaged three A320s plus a C-130 belonging to the Belgian Air Force that were in the shop for heavy maintenance. One A320 belonged to Armenian airline Armavia, which lost another A320 two days earlier when it crashed into the Black Sea Additional A320s reportedly were owned by an Armenian entrepreneur and Hellas Jet, which was operating them with Volare titles.

The Nanaimo Pionairs coffee klatch on May 10th was attended by Terry Baker, Pat and Art McCarville, Hans and Eppie Broucher, Carol and Bryan Humphrey and Terry Charles. The Next meeting will be in October, when we hope to hear of some exciting vacations taken during the summer.

An ex-Marine Aviator, wanted to show off his new twin-engine plane. I was riding along as he put it through its paces. Suddenly, we were caught in a violent thunderstorm, with lightning crashing all around us. Next, we lost the radio and most of the instruments.
As we were being tossed around in the sky, George said, "Uh-oh!"
Fearing the worst, I asked, "What's wrong now?"
George replied, "I got the hiccups. Do something to scare me."

A Bonanza landed at my home airport some years ago with the leading edge of the left wing bashed in from hitting a goose in flight.
A remark from a Cessna driver was overheard: "If he'd been flying a high-wing airplane, he'd have missed it."

While trying to work touch-and-goes with a student in the traffic pattern at Daggett Airport, we were acutely aware of a pair of regional airline Fokker jets practicing the VOR approach to an intersecting runway. Each time they executed a missed approach, but we would hold short just in case they landed. Finally, I keyed the mic and asked them if they were ever going to land.

Their curt response: "Negative, the company said they don't mind buying the gas, but we have to buy our own tires."
