NetLetter Archives

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

This is now automated so that you can remove yourself from the list or change your email address (or name) without our assistance. We will still do this manually if you have any difficulties.

Recently a change has been made to travel immediately following the death of the Retiree. In the past upon the death of the Employee / Retiree the Pass Travel Profile was closed.

The change is the Profile will remain open for a thirty (30 day) period, following notification of the Employee / Retiree's death. This will allow for the Widow / Widower, children and any Non Dependant children to complete their travel needs.
In the untimely event that the new Widow / Widower Profile has not been completed an extension may be requested from Employee Travel if travel is expected.

Spanair tackles OTP for domestic flights. Spanair is extending its "punctuality guarantee" for all domestic flights to Dec. 31. Under the program, business class passengers receive a free ticket and economy class passengers a 25 per cent discount on their next ticket if the aircraft pulls back from the gate more than 15 minutes after the scheduled departure for reasons attributed to the airline. Those early days of T.C.A. - The fleet of Lancaster aircraft were registered as CF-CMS, CMT, CMU, CMV, CMW, CMX, CMY and CNA CF-CMU disappeared over the Atlantic Dec 28th., 1946 CF-CMS caught fire and crashed near Dorval Jun 1st., 1945

I.A.T.A. fixed the cost of a ticket over the Atlantic , after WW11, at ca$375 each way, To celebrate Vancouver's Diamond Jubilee, the first Lancaster to visit Vancouver July 12th., 1946, after a 28 hour flight from Prestwick, Scotland. All Lancasters were subsequently sold off by the end of 1946 when the North Stars arrived in the fleet.

When Airlines Fight, Children Win

WestJet, Canada's biggest low-cost airline, "unreservedly apologizes" to Air Canada for an episode of industrial espionage, in a joint statement released on Monday. WestJet, the fast-growing low- cost airline, admitted that it snooped in Air Canada's computer files, using a password provided by a former employee. "This conduct was both unethical and unacceptable and WestJet accepts full responsibility for such misconduct," the statement reads. To settle their dispute, WestJet agreed to pay Air Canada's investigation and litigation costs of $5.5 million and will donate $10 million to children's charities. WestJet, based in Calgary, was founded in 1996 and modeled after Southwest Airlines. The company operates a fleet of Boeing 737s awards for innovative management.

FLYING WITHOUT AIRPLANES Airplanes, of course, aren't the only ways to get aloft, and creative minds are always inventing new ways to defy gravity. One of the stranger flight modes we've seen is the one chosen by John Ninomiya, who gathers a cluster of small helium balloons together, straps himself in, and takes off. To ascend, he drops sand or water ballast; to descend, the balloons are cut away or popped, one by one. "Even after you've done it many times before, there's still something a bit unreal to it," Ninomiya says. "You wonder: Am I really doing this?" He'll be flying the colorful balloons at festivals around the country this summer.

U.S. NOT READY TO IMPLEMENT NEW TRAVEL LAW: REPORT
The Bush administration is not ready to implement a travel law that would require everyone entering the U.S. to have a passport or some other form of national identification by Jan. 2008, according to a new report.
