NetLetter Archives

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

Our 'NetLetter' is NOT sponsored by any Pionair group, nor are we seeking any financial support, only the Internet email addresses of those who would like to receive our 'NetLetter'. Please forward this to other retirees who can then subscribe right from the forwarded link at the bottom of this email.

Welcome to the 935nd issue of "NetLetter". We now estimate that the NetLetter is read by over 2726 retirees when counting our email distribution and those that print the NetLetter and give them out to their friends.

Following this morning's police operation, the Department for Transport has asked all UK airports to apply additional security measures designed to ensure passenger safety.

Hand baggage restrictions:
These measures will prevent passengers from carrying hand luggage into the cabin of an aircraft with the following excepts (which must be placed in a plastic bag):
- pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags));
- travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
- prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
- spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
- contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
- for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).
- female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
- tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
- keys (but no electrical key fobs)

All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

Pushchairs and walking aids must be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point. In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

Heightened security measures implemented following this morning's events in the United Kingdom. Transport Canada has implemented heightened aviation security measures to help ensure the ongoing security of the travelling public. As a result, Air Canada and Jazz flights are expected to experience some delays during the course of the day. All of our London flights are operating, with most of them experiencing delays. The following security measures have been put in place until further notice: Effective today, liquids or gels in containers of any size are not permitted as carry-on baggage on all flights within and departing Canada. To facilitate airport processing, customers are advised to restrict carry-on baggage as much as possible. In addition, for passengers travelling from the United Kingdom, all airlines, including Air Canada, are now subject to new security measures announced today by British authorities, whereby carry-on baggage will not be! permitted on flights from the U.K. until further notice. Air Canada has been informed that operating flight crews are exempt from these new regulations. We are permitting customers who are travelling to, from and via the United Kingdom, who wish to make alternate travel arrangements, to do so without penalty.

Turkish Airlines are considering joining the alliance.

Further to Jim Pierce's historical info about Between Ourselves, perhaps I can add a little. Rene Baudru, assistant to Dave Tennant for so many years was the first editor of the airline's "house organ" (which is why he was the first to be asked to join the editorial board first established many years later when Ed Thackray joined the airline as editor), Don McLeod was the first formal/official editor of the magazine and was followed by Al Carlson who had been his assistant.

This takes us to the early 50s when Betty Davidson then took over the reins. A major change of format and frequency to a newspaper was then overseen by a man named Stan Moncrieff (who later left the airline to become night editor of the Honolulu Star Bulletin) Ed Thackray was subsequently recruited by Public Relations chief Rod MacInnes. Ed had been the number two man on Canadair's well- read and popular employee newspaper. Ed knew the publications business but did not the airline so he took on a junior in the PR department as his assistant. That was me, Norm Garwood.

Following Ed's passing, I returned from a Marketing position to become editor. During my stint in the editor's chair, I introduced the French-language edition (before Federal legislation dictated we do so) and renamed the publication(s) Horizons as a practical title in either language. After I moved on to other work in the Publics Affairs branch in Headquarters and in the field, I was succeeded by Bob Todd who had worked with me and he was followed by Pat Budgeon, a long-time employee in the PR Branch. Of course, all of us before and since, have been supported by HQ and Field colleagues and the general employee population which made Between Ourselves/Horizons and award winning publication which was appreciated by employees and their families.
